#15618, "Is Santa Margarita picking up at all?"

Hey guys. I'm headed to Santa Margarita tomorrow morning, and I am curious whether its starting to pick up at all out there? Last time I was there (a few weeks ago), I caught a lot of bass, but they were all really small. Anyone been out there recently? I assume there will be a bit of swimbait action soon, now that they have started stocking trout.

My buddy and I have been catching fish but not big ones. Every spot we stop at produces small fish. We've been fishing shallow with crankbaits. Haven't picked up anything deep. We're going out today it's 7am and I'll be there about 10 this morning....BassMan...

Well, I was out at Lopez Thursday, and it was more of the same. I fished Whittenberg (or however you spell it) and caught probably 30 bass, but the biggest was only about 2 lbs... if that... I started out drop shotting and throwing deep cranks along the bank across from the swim cove, then threw a lipless crank around the stick ups in the back of the cove. The 2 pounder bit the lipless crank. I am desperate for a good fish... Its been way too long....

True catching bigger fish would be nice (and will be here very soon, again!) But ya know, I would take a day like I had last weekend on Lopez over those dozen or so days I have had in the past couple of years, catching one or two 4 - 5 lb'rs. Catching 30+ Bass on Margarita or Lopez is a great thing....Dang, wish I was able to go back out this weekend... ;(

Well, I'm going to give Margarita another try today. We'll see how that goes.

Margarita was extremely slow. No more crankbait bite. Now I'm fishing jigs in 10 to 20 feet water. Caught three fish one 4#er. Got 5 bites in 7.5 hours of fishing.....BassMan

Well, I got a few on a deep crank, and a few on a spider grub. Biggest for the day was about a pound and a half.... again... I just got my Humminbird rigged up on my kayak though. That was fun.
