15618, Is Santa Margarita picking up at all?
Posted by KayakFisher805, Fri Oct-21-05 02:33 PM
Hey guys. I'm headed to Santa Margarita tomorrow morning, and I am curious whether its starting to pick up at all out there? Last time I was there (a few weeks ago), I caught a lot of bass, but they were all really small. Anyone been out there recently? I assume there will be a bit of swimbait action soon, now that they have started stocking trout.

Last thing I heard about Santa Margarita was that it was slow. Hope you do good out there, post a report on your outing. I will be on Lopez all day on Sunday...Report to follow...

Well, I caught quite a few fish at Margarita yesterday, but my best all day was about a pound and a half. I just couldn't find the good fish. Just about everything I tried worked (topwater in the morning, dropshotting and deep cranks in the afternoon, mostly), but I just couldn't find any size...

Sounds like the same thing at Lopez...the lakes have a bunch of bass this size...just wait til spring....By the way, keep an eye out on the Kickboat/Floattube forum below...we will be starting a Central coast region of BasnTubes in 2006. Kayaks are welcome to join in the fun....

Yeah its seems to be quatity over quality but im not complaining, they will grow up eventually and its great to see alot of activity in the lakes.San Antonios busting them on the shad baits right now ,may want to fish there for some sizable fish.
tight lines, Brian

Well, I'm heading out to lopez today. Maybe this weather we're having will make some of the bigger fish more active?

Caught the small ones but did catch a 4.5 with a crankbait and it had a trout in its throat. I'm going out tommarrow too...BassMan

My buddy and I have been catching fish but not big ones. Every spot we stop at produces small fish. We've been fishing shallow with crankbaits. Haven't picked up anything deep. We're going out today it's 7am and I'll be there about 10 this morning....BassMan...

Well, I was out at Lopez Thursday, and it was more of the same. I fished Whittenberg (or however you spell it) and caught probably 30 bass, but the biggest was only about 2 lbs... if that... I started out drop shotting and throwing deep cranks along the bank across from the swim cove, then threw a lipless crank around the stick ups in the back of the cove. The 2 pounder bit the lipless crank. I am desperate for a good fish... Its been way too long....

True catching bigger fish would be nice (and will be here very soon, again!) But ya know, I would take a day like I had last weekend on Lopez over those dozen or so days I have had in the past couple of years, catching one or two 4 - 5 lb'rs. Catching 30+ Bass on Margarita or Lopez is a great thing....Dang, wish I was able to go back out this weekend... ;(

Margarita was extremely slow. No more crankbait bite. Now I'm fishing jigs in 10 to 20 feet water. Caught three fish one 4#er. Got 5 bites in 7.5 hours of fishing.....BassMan

Well, I got a few on a deep crank, and a few on a spider grub. Biggest for the day was about a pound and a half.... again... I just got my Humminbird rigged up on my kayak though. That was fun.
