Hey Rob, It depends on the size and weight of the spinnerbait, but generally a stiff rod er,Heavy Action 7' with 3/8oz and up, and 1/4 and smaller, 6 1/2 med action rod. Usually when a bass hits a spinnerbait that has "Everything" ie: right blade and color combo for conditions and water clarity, they will "TRY TO TAKE YOUR ROD AWAY FROM YOU"!!! With a larger/heavier bait 3/8 + When they hit the bait that hard, key here>>**with a heavy action rod** they will hook themselves! This is because with a larger profile, once they commit ,they usually COMMIT!! With a softer rod, the chance of burying any/all hooks Deep and through bone/cartiledge is reduced GREATLY!! With a smaller/lighter bait, 1/4 and down or small tungsten spinnerbaits ie; smaller profile and SMALLER HOOKS, the fish will be trying to engulf the bait( as opposed to just trying to KILL and/or stun it on the first hit and then after stunning it, come back and eat it (head first). In this case a lighter/medium action is desired to facilitate the fish ENGULFING the bait without too much resitance. Also the lighter action will help prevent the hook from tearing out. As ALWAYS, once the fish is hooked ,it is up to us "Joeimabassfisherperson" to get him landed. Using a quality mono/co-polymer like P-Line CXX of 12-20 lbs, will give a little bit/stretch (IDEAL) or Fluorocarbon for a more solid hookset,as opposed to braid. ALWAYSALWAYSALWAYS-Trailer Hooks and SHARP HOOKS!!So sharp, that if you (accidently) drop the bait on your leg, foot or back of your hand, you pray it didn't go past the barb!! If a fish slaps at the bait you've still got a good chance of hooking him. Oh,and last, but MOST IMPORTANT, Tie good,no GREAT KNOTS, I use PALOMAR knots with spinner/buzz baits. It does no bloody good to have and use the best of everything if you tie a crappy knot. I hope this helps anyone. Jes' my opine, Alex
