Medium to MH action rod, braid and trailer hooks always. My favorite spinnerbait setup is a Castaway WRM66 and 30# Spiderwire stealth. The WRM66 is perfect for throwing 1/4 and 3/8 oz. baits which is what I'm throwing 90% of the time. I like the braid because I can feel every turn of the blades, but more importantly I can feel when the blades stop turning.

I like a Heavy action stiff rod for blades because of the following

1. I am throwing 1/2oz-3/4oz blades 95% of the time
2. I am throwing them in the grass/moss need a sensitive graphite rod to be able to feel the blades turning even if I am slow rolling the bait.
3. I am hoping to catch a good size fish so like a beffy rod to help handle the fish

the rod i throw spinnerbaits is a 7' medium clarus rod. that a curado, 15big game and a white strike king are all you need to get bass at sweetwater. haha

Rob:

Definetly MH or Heavy...7 footer...or a good 6.5 footer or something in between.

For me, what makes a killer spinnerbait rod is fast action. Really tapered fast action is what I like. Good precision control with underarm roll cast assualts, and definitely a good leverage point for the sweep and reel hooksets. Besides just meaty rod, fast action is my preference.

I would like to see a better pistol grip evolution for a one handed spinnerbait stick in the 6.5 to 7 foot range. I don't need a long handle--in every case....I'm sorta into smaller vs. longer rod handles on for baits that mose guys prefer long handles for. I like the precision and effeciency of one handed casting with reaction baits, and a shorter reel handle is my preference. One big enough for two hands but not for three hands!!! Like a Excalibur handles on the old Phenix rods. Mid-length. The best blade fishermen I've seen aren't necessarily making the longest casts...just with the most casts and with the best accuracy and reaction presentation. Distance is needed, but not the biggest factor for IMO lately. Smaller handle for me also means I can put more really subtle pulses and swim on the bait...just more control of details..stop starts kills, etc...with one hand firmly in control of the rod I can get the tip of the rod to do more vs. one hand with the butt tucked under my arm. I've been thinking of the full circle thing...that 7 foot rods where and are the shiz, and pistol grips and Hank Parker are Old&IntheWay. (you ever watch hank blade fish? Short, pistol grip, round reel and totally 80s!). I think slightly shorter and more manageable rods will sorta make a resurgence as reaction bait guys compete for the same fish with the same baits. 7 foot + rods with long handles are sold as long casting and comfortable to fish...which they ARE. However, I'm thinking these rods have sorta transformed the style of the fishing done on them....and blades are really trippy, and subtle things in blade fishing seem to work wonders.

Yeah, so why do you ask? Whats with you and blades lately...? :)

I still use my tried and true Compre 6.6 MH for blades that are 1/4 to
3/8oz. The butt section is shorter and for manuverability, it suits me just fine. For lures 1/2 to 3/4oz I use a longer rod (Phenix) 7 ft. MH with a fast tip. This season, I'll use more trailer hooks!

Live to fish another Day!!

This is all good discussion. It's pretty obvious that there are a wide range of opinions on what a good spinnerbait rod is, which could mean that it's not super important, or could mean that some of you guys could be using something better ;) (joke joke).

The only reason I'm asking is because I have low confidence in spinnerbait fishing and find that when I do throw blades I miss an unacceptable number of bites. In general I don't like any technique where you lose more than 30% of your bites, but I also know that a spinnerbait can be a good way to catch keepers in tournaments so I'm just trying to improve for the odd occasion where I might need to throw one.
