Tried Perris shoreline yesterday afternoon from the Bernasconie Beach access road. I was rigged with 2 straight-tail robo's when I got nailed twice in a 1/2hr but came up with nothing but frustration!. I was using 1/0 Gamakatsu straight-shank hooks, because I did not have any drop-shot hooks. Any help out there on what size/make of drop-shot hooks would help, or I will just change my handle to "BadHkSet".

Hit Skinner on Saturday. It had to be the most miserable spot in So Cal. 20mph winds and it poured from 9:00 am to 12:30. There were only 2 boats on the whole lake when we left around 1:00. Did not get a bump, but we were too damn cold to even try to figure out a pattern.

If I'm fishing weedless, I use 1/0 or 2/0 ewg offset gammies on 4" & 6" worms. When I nose hook, I use #2 or #4 gammie dropshot hooks. I have had a real good hook up ratio in the past with the dropshot hooks!

One thing I have noticed in the past is that my hardest hits, the kind that pull your rod tip down, usually don't result in a hook up. I think they are just small fish, maybe even bluegill, grabbing the worm and running QUICK!

You are using the right tackle. Those are small fish just grabbing the tail of the worm. It has been happening to everyone at Perris so don't feel bad.

I don't use any special dropshot hooks. For 4 to 4.5 inch worms, I use either a #2 hayabusa offset worm hook or mostly a #2 eagleclaw lasersharp offset worm hook for weedless D/S. For open hooking, I use a #2 Owner Mosquito. You might be getting bit by pesky trout not bass.

Thanks to all for the recommended size hooks, and it is probably small fish robbing me at Perris. NoTroll- I am going to hit Poway shoreline late-A.M Friday leaving from work, and hopefully get the boat out on Saturday-PM at Skinner. Hope to see you out there.

Woodsac has the right idea for hooks, but remember the hook set is different when dropshoting, do not jerk the rod up just sweep it up slowly or sometimes just reel.

i use #4 rig n' hooks from owner. I started out using #2 gamakatsu offset worm hooks but then found out the smaller the hook the more action you get from the worm. And then i started using 3" worms and got no action from the gamakatsu hook. So i switched to the owner drop shot hooks and started to straighten them out on fish bigger than a lb. the mosquito hooks never looked appealing to me until my friend started using the rig n' hook. imo that's the best hook for drop shot by far. i don't use anything else. the #4 works on 3-4.5" worms fine for me and i can't remember the last time i lost a fish or a hookset. About the sweeping action on the hookset...that might be fine and all but i like to really drive the hook in his ass...doesnt' fail me.

I agree with the Rig n' Hook opinion, but I also think that the Gamakatsu G-Lock hook fits into the category of superior drop-shot hooks.

I've used both, and the G-lock lays the worm out a little nicer and straighter than the Rig n' Hook. Both hooks are exceptionally strong and sharp, and produced excellent hook-up ratios. The only critique I would offer with regards to the Owner, is that sometimes the 6- inch or larger worm "slides" off the hook (Skin-hooked T-rig) due to its gap design. Other than that....Awesome hook!

can you use the g-lock hook for small worms like 3-4.5"? Does that hook come that small? I think in know which hooks you're talking about but i thought they only come in big hooks which would be better for drop shotting 6" worms? i think i use them for soft plastic rip baits but i'm not sure what those are called.

Yes, they come in small sizes for Drop-shotting.

I use the size 1 for 4-4.5 inch worms and 1/0 or 2/0 for 6 inch worms.(Depending on thickness of worm)

The same goes for the owner Rig n' hook.

Try them out...You'll be happy you did!

I have found that swinging is best if weedless and that reeling and/or a rod sweep is best when open hooking. For me at least.

I come from a commercial fishing background. Have been doing it for many years. 95% of the hooks we use are circle hooks. I decided to try them on drop shots. The hook up percentage is high because they set themselves. I use the Owner thin wire circle hooks and have never had a reason to try anything else. I even use them for surf perch with grubs or live bait. Just my two cents.

Don't be afraid to try the diaichi (yes, I probably spelled it wrong)
re-barb hooks when dropshotting. They are all I use and I always rigs the worms weedless. These hooks are really strong and sharp and the worm never slips with them!
