#3693, "April 14, 2002 - Pinto Lake"

Summer and I went down to Pinto today for the free kids fishing day. There wound up being ample help available for the kids, so after a bit we just launched the boat and headed out. The water was very clear for Pinto, 6 to 8 feet of visibility. I was determined to get a plug fish at Pinto because I haven't been able to yet, and there is no reason they shouldn't hit it there, especially with the clearer than normal water. Right away I had two big fish chase my 9" slammer after we set out. Both were 8 or 9lbs. I was feeling optimistic about a good bite on the plug that's for sure! Well time went by and I had some more followers, smaller fish mostly. One 3 or 4lber came up along side the plug and boiled on it but didn't hit it. A couple males that were guarding fry nosed out after it, but nobody wanted to open their mouth for me today. I threw a spinnerbait a little and flipped some soft plastic in between throwing the plug. I had one bite on the spinner but missed it. I watched a fish come out after a ring worm and then turn at the last second before eating it. And late in the day I had three more good follows from 4 to 6lb fish on the Slammer but they just wouldn't go. Wound up getting skunked for all the effort. I think the better females were in their immediately post spawn funk and the males were just cruising or guarding fry but not guarding it in a way that you could work them and catch them. Darce, John, Mark, Chris Z, and Robert L. were out there in their kickboats but the only action I heard was John flipped one small fish. Bite should pick up in a few weeks (1 to 3).
