#4642, "RE: lunar influence?"

I've yet to read anything that summed up lunar influence in a meaningful way. Some people may understand it, but if they are - they are not sharing.
My thinking about lunar influence is not very concrete. But see if you can follow this train of thought...
Question: What does the moon do to the ocean? Answer - It generates tides
Question: Do some species spawn in response to moon phases in the ocean? Answer - yes. Squid in particular
Question: Why would animals spawn during full moon periods? Answer - (theoretical answer here based only on my own speculation) I think ocean species spawn on moon phase to distribute eggs and larvae more effectively. If you are a squid spawning during periods of strong current, your eggs are more likely to spread around and proliferate the species as a result.
Question: Did largemouth bass evolve from some ocean going species? Answer: I don't know, but it seems likely that all fresh water species have a long lost ocean going relative.
Question: Are largemouth bass influenced by the moon? Answer: Almost certainly, and probably as a result of ancient tide related influences on survival of the species.
Question: Can bass fishing be predicated based on moon? Answer: Probably not. But does it have an influence - almost certainly.
Question: Is there some formula for predicting bass behavior based on moon (like spawning or feeding)? Answer: Maybe. I see patterns here but nothing concrete. I believe that in the absence of other factors, moon can play a strong role. But other factors can come in and negate moon as a factor. eg. if a wave of spawning bass moves up on a moon phase but right as they are getting ready to go a major cold front comes through - the bass will back off.
People who claim that bass spawns or feeding can be predicted strictly on lunar influence are either trying to sell you some lunar chart product, or they just haven't fished enough to realize what reality is. In more southern latitudes with consistent weather - yes I think moon can be more predicable. In northern climates (Northern California for example) moon is often trumped as a factor by weather, water level, and other conditions.
This is just my opinion. Maybe when I am old I will understand it more. But I think that 99% of people who claim to use the moon to predict fishing are full of it. There are too many other relavent variables. Only a detailed statistical analysis using multiple linear regression over tremendous periods of time with terrific, very accurate, unbiased data will convince me otherwise. As far as I know, no one has done it.
