i was thinking, if you take a yamamoto spider grub, rip out the twin tails and rig it backwards, you have an Ika. Plus, the twintail spider grubs are cheaper then the ikas if my memory serves me right.

Why not just wait until something tears the grubs tails off, doesn't make sense doing it like that.I always save the tore up hula grubs to make in to ikas.

no fish would tear my grubs tail. its actually quite annoying. its in the my list of stuff to learn how to fish but i have a few other things i rather learn first.
but to answer your question: what if you need the ika at that same moment. you wont have time to fish the grub till the tails fall off.

The Fat Ika is very heavy opposed to the grub. It weighs almost a 1/2 ounce with a 4/0 or 5/0 hook. I used to do that until the Ika came out and now I use that. But the fall is different between the two and they fish diferently. So experiment and tell us how you did!

That's the reaon that I fish the tail less spider grub at all. It's just something different. The fish at the Pudd get absolutely hammered every weekend and different is what I need. Ika just doesn't get bit as much as the spider grub minus the tail out there.

i tried the tailless spider grub today. worked out pretty good. hooked it weightless with a 3/0 red EWG hook and pitched it into pine branches that some gardeners had left in the lake. my technique was to let it fall on slack line, deadstick it on the bottom for a bit then retrieve it slowly. during the retrieval part i would alternate between lots of short jerks, slow and long jerks which mmade it glide and just steady retrieving. i caught a few fish, most were during the fall, got on the dead stick and 2 while jerking it back in. and i finally used up all those twintails.

I finally figured out that throwing out the tail-less spider jigs was a waste, not the same as the fat Ika, but still a viable bait- shoots, they make a great drop shot bait

i have never had any luck on the tailless spider grubs, but yet again i have never had luck on fat ikas either , so i just fish the grubs as grubs and dont get ikas any more plus they cost to much for me.
