I wrapped up my 2003 fishing season yesterday at Spring Lake. Tried ripping, drop-shotting & flipping a jig without success. Then, picked up the swimbait & 1st cast - bam - a nice 4.2 lb fish. Alas, a short time later, my "Charlie" swimbait broke at the bill. I don't know if the cold water had anything to do with it, but that was the only one I brought. Went back to ripping & caught a keeper-sized fish over some rocks. I just had 2 hours to fish in the afternoon, so it wasn't too bad an outing.
The water was pretty cold - didn't bring a temp gauge, but my guess would be low 50's. Clarity is OK - about 3 - 4 ft. Also, out in the middle, bordering that creek or road bed or whatever it is, a lot of leafy, green weeds are growing. These weeds are different than those clumpy, brown weeds that form the gigantic beds in much of the lake. Whatever this weed is, it sure looks healthy for December - nice, bright green leaves.
