#9179, "Dana Point...all in the Harbor"

Took the yak to Dana Saturday, and it was wide open on the LOG barracudas, and I mean LOGS. I caught three that had to be pushing 10 pounds, plus a number of 29-30 inchers and the usual 24" shakers.

So I returned today, Sunday, with my Buddy FinnFisher and my Bro ParCam and all three of my yaks.

It wasn't as wide open as Saturday, but I still had a blast, and some variety this time.

Just minutes after launching and setting up the trolling rods got slammed and had a very fun spirited fight on my freshwater bass rod, millionaire reel and 10# test flourocarbon line for a 26" very nice looking White Sea Bass.

It hit my orange/gold rebel fastrac and was a sign of things to come, as all my "good" fish today came on that same, now kinda trashed looking, lure.

I caught three keeper sized Barracuda, but no monsters like saturday. Today all the Barracuda were 29"ers or shorter. Caught 6 or 7 shorts. I also caught another BIG WSB, or rather farmed him fumbling for my camera for another picture, just as well. He looked jut short of 28" and hit the lure so hard it stopped my FnD Kayak and towed me around for a while. Fun.

We went over to Doheny just for a look-see, but the wind was blowing and the swell was up and the direction was making it unwise to fish our shallow spots, so back we went.

VERY fun day with my bro and my friend, and some BIG and enthusiastic fishes!

Thanks! I did out-fish my two buddies who were right with me, one was skunked and the other caught one short 'cuda. But I'm pretty serious about what I do, even for fun, and If I wasn't already a very happy pro-athlete, I would go pro with my flying or fishing, and most likely be just as happy. It's all a matter of free time...

Anyway, I caught all but two short 'cudas on the same 4.5" rebel Fastrac in Orange-gold. I have bought $200 worth of these lures, in different colors etc. after reading "The Baja Catch."

That book is worth it's weight in Dorado or yellowtail, or Calicos to anyone fishing the Pacific from Orange County to Cabo.

i was fishing the dock for some bait size smelt. i'll try the chumming next time, dont think it would have worked this time cause the wind was really strong. have u ever tried using like a film canister filled with dog food as a sinker? i thought i saw something like that on the back of a sabiki rig.
i'll try that lure u caught all the cuda on. for that type of lure do i cast and retrieve it or would it be fine to drift it from a raft?

thanks alot for both ur help
mike

Drift would be a bit slow, I troll it at 3-4 mph, paddling speed on a yak. Cast and retrieve is fine. I get live smelt off the little pier at night, or around the bait receiver daytime, or *best* at second spot off doheny.

Look for the shallowest lobster bouy and drift there. Lately I never even bother to chum, just toss out a hayabusa Sabiki with the metallic glitter and a green FT on the bottom and retreive slowly just under the surface. Been getting the 6" smelts two and three at a time before the weather hit.

i found a rapala husky jerk in my tackle box and it seems like it would work great for cuda so i'll probably just use that and try to save some cash. also have u noticed if the halibut bite was picking up at dana point?

thanks alot for all your help

The bite was wide open a week ago, before the storm, off Doheny. I caught 11 including 4 keepers on a 4" power-pulse berkely power worm in watermelon/red glitter. I haven't tried for flatties in the harbor for a month, after getting skunked on them a coupla times. They might be back...
