Walked the beach in Oceanside yesterday from around 11:00 am -3:00 pm in search of the srappy Barred Perch. I walked from Oceanside Blvd to the Pier and back. I tossed 1.5 Motoroil/Gold Flake and Perch Power on the Carolina Rig.

It was my first opportunity to try out my new Fenwick Salmon/Steelhead Rod that I ordered. Wow! what a great way to break it in! First fish was a 21" Corbina on the Perch Power. Kind of scary on 4# P-Line but thanks to the sweet drag on my Shimano Stradic, no problem. About an hour later, another Corbina in there at 19". Both released at the protest of some enthusiastic kids that were following Me like the Good Humor Ice Cream Man. :7

I caught several Bardies but they were all candidates for the "Dink" Category. Water Temp was 64, cooling a bit, and there was alot of salad in the water like last week. The swell action hasn't been that large so it makes me wonder where the kelp is coming from.

I saw several Corbina cruizing the shallows on the outgoing tide in so close that you wonder how they keep from beaching themselves sometimes.

Going out again this morning. If I do anything I will post. I think I will work the same area and then try the Harbor Jetty for another crack at a Flattie.

Thats awesome! Way to go, catching two corbina on the grub. Just one question, what is the "Perch Power" you used on the grubs?

Perch Power is the "name" of the 1.5" grub by Kalin. I use Smelly Jelly (Shrimp) as the scent that I dab on the grub.

Good job on the corbs. Those Fenwick's really are pretty sweet for the surf. Seems kinda odd when you first think about it, but once you try them they are nice. Perfect action.

I need to get my dad back down there soon. Maybe Sat.

The weather people are predicting a big swell for this weekend. There is an early morning High Tide around 7. Thought I would be down that way as before. Maybe we will connect again. Say Hi to Pop for me. Hope the salad subsides a bit!

Good job on the corbs...nice sized ones too!

I've been asking around about the Lug Worms that have been mentioned here on our site and no one that I know seems to have any idea what they are. Most of the guys that bring them up are posters from Orange County. Is there anyone here in San Diego County that knows of a shop that sells them and at what price?

Specifically: what sort of retrieve. And was it blind-casting, or did you see the corbina?

Also: side comment. I can't see corbina. I frequent places where I'm told they are, and other people report seeing them there, but I've never seen them. I'm surely looking for the wrong thing, in the wrong place. Help?

Catching the Corbina on grubs is purely incidental as I don't believe anyone here really targets them. There are much better ways to increase your chances of hooking them. Sand Crabs, Mussel,Blood Worms, ect will reward you much better than plastics IMO.

As far as the retrieve is concerned, it was a slow steady crank that caught those that I spoke of. They were caught on blind casts. I never have seen a fish of any species strike while fishing in the surf.

Corbina are relitively easy to spot in the surf. Just start walking in ankle deep water and scan tha water that is about6" or less as it is receeding back out. I usually see more on the outgoing tide.

If you live near a pier, just look down in that rea shallow water and you should see them cruizing, hugging the beach real close up sometimes exposing their backs out of the water.

They won't be as plentiful here soon as the water temp will begin to drop rapidly.
