I am planning to take my kayak out to San Luis harbor
and try for some halibut on sunday.I was wondering where
I could launch it. I have never launched it anywhere other
than morro bay where there are no waves. If anyone has any
advice for me that would be great.I will post how I do
when I get back. I am bringing some fastracs so hopefully
those things are as good as everyone (Brian)says.

You can launch just about anywhere from Avila up to the old port pier. If you have a decent vehicle, you can drive down onto the beach to launch just north of Avila. If its at all swelly, go up to the harbor boat launch, as it is behind a little jetty. They've let me launch for free there in the past. Good luck, and let us know how you do!!!!

ALRIGHT!! I'm gonna be launching my kayaks tomorrow most likely at the shore at the base of Port San Luis Pier. If you see two peeps out in blue kayaks, gimme a holler. We are going to attemp to get some live bait, and if no, we are gonna get some dead chovies. I also wonder if the bait guys have any bait? I am gonna bring my float tube live well to store any bait if i happen to catch any or can buy a little. Like i said, please dont be a stranger! Good luck!

Till Later,
Joel

To fish, or not to fish, what a stupid question!!

Well I went fishing out at avila today.I launched the kayak
from the beach just north of the oil pier at around 10:00.
The first hit I had turned out to be a smelt.I fished for a
few more hours and only got a few hits, not sure what they were.
(all were on the 5 in fastrac) It was pretty tough fishing because the wind picked up at about 11:00 and I could hardly paddle against it.I talked to someone out there that caught 4
halibut drifting frozen anchovies just north of the oil pier,
only one legal though. Then I talked to a diver that had been out and he said he only saw little ones.I guess I'll try again next week or maybe in Morro Bay since I live closer I just dont know if anyone is cathing them here yet.Oh yeah I looked for fisherman 321 but never saw you I cant wait to see how you did
I'll check the posts later.

Well, I ended up launching a little late due to rod crate troubles. Oh well, finally launched just as the wind was picking up like $^*@#$!! We were planning on going over to the smith Island and the breakwater, but were swept half way out to sea, and had to paddle like a Mother to get back in. Finally made it back and were freezing cold and said screw the fishing. We then powered over to avila beach and explored the creak and discovered something neat. Everywhere we would go, hundreds of anchovies would dart around, but you could only see them with polarized glasses. Ended the day dumping the yak from lots of fun waves in the surf, and fishless. Planning on launching next weekend bright and early with the correct setups and a better crate to hold my gear, some new fish traps and fastracs, and
warm clothes. By the way, at about noon the wind kicks in, so after that, watch TV! I had a great time and talked to one other yaker who gave me a swimbait, said he got one short, and got a legal yesterday on the swimbait. I tell ya, i need to get some new swimbaits. Do they work being trolled too?

Till Later,
Joel
