Met up with Dana Point Marlin guy Aaron (Marlineer) around 4:30 at the SS ramp for a little bassin' for the first time in far to long. The wind was there to greet us blowing straight down from the north so we took a few over the bow of my little aluminum can trying to make it to the shelter of our beloved wall. We had a slow pick of mixed species working the inside wherever the wind would allow. As the sun started going down the bite picked up & Aaron got to experience our only humbling of the evening. This fish was very strong & ran a little ways up the wall on a tight drag before breaking him off on some structure? On our 3rd attempt to get outside the wind had finally laid down enough for us to get out for a great flurry of chunky 14"-17" calicos with a couple nice sandies thrown in as the sun went down. Our only photo worthy fish was a calico that may have went 4 but the world will never know because he flipped off boatside. Ended up with around 25-30 fish mostly calicos but enough variety to keep it interesting. Never found a color that really stood out but the 4" Hammers got bit much better than the fives. After dark the Assalt Spider Grub fished on a weedless head was key. All warmed up for the skiff trip!!
