Tubed Goleta Beach this weekend both days. Gotta love that. The water was at 63 so I anticipated a good bite. Was not disappointed! Took about 5 or 6 shorts and a nice 26"incher. All fish hit the 3"inch Chovy from BH. (That is the first picture. Went out on the pier to fillet him. My buddy Boyd snapped the pic for me and posted it on Pierfishing.com.) On Sunday fishing was a little tougher. I went out with my buddy Abel and kicked all the way past the steps from the parking lot at the Beach for only 6 fish between the both of us. One being a nice 23"incher I picked up on the way in. (Second picture.) All in all a fun weekend out. Would have been a lot nicer to see the sun but no go on Mr. Shine. Anyways, get out there and get the lines wet people. Fishing is picking up. Last pic is what happens when the Hali mess with big D!!LOL j/k

Nice fish! I was hoping to catch one from shore using the 3" swimbaits but had no luck (no luck on the halibut, but got plenty of perch). How far out did you go in the tube, and to which side of the pier? From where you were fishing, do you think its possible for me to reach those areas casting from the beach?

I launch at the end of Goleta Beach Parking lot, west of the pier towards UCSB. I caught my legals 50 yards or so off the rock slab. If you are looking straight out you will notice a bigger sized kelp bed. Behind it is a nice sandbar thats can hold alot of fish pending conditions. But the rock itself can be very productive for BSP and Halibut. I caught my 34" inch there last year from the rock. It was a little hairy gettin down to an area to land it though. The day before was a horrible day. I hooked up with a very nice fish (Till this day I think it was the same fish! Not likely I know) and jumped down to the rocks to the left of the slab and as soon as my foot hit, I slipped, fell, dropped my pole, broke the reel off and needless to say lost the fish! Ouch. That hurt. Anyways, you can also try the beach over by the steps by the Biology building. I have caught Halies along that stretch of beach on the 3"inch baits. Goodluck. Hope to see you out there.

The rock slab....I think thats where I was fishing last weekend. Went down the stairs, made a right turn and headed towards the point. Between the steps and the surf spot, I saw a patch of kelp. It was in-between tides so I could walk out pretty far. Got one perch of the kelp in that area. I think thats the spot you're talking about, right?

There's also a big rock slab at the point itself.

I see there's a big high tide tonight at 7:45. I'll pass on the nba finals and go fishing instead. I'll probably head to Goleta beach again tonight.

Actually no. That is not the "slab" I was referring to. I am talking about the rock at the end of the Goleta Beach Parking lot. You take the same route as if you were heading out onto tyhe pier, but instead of turning left to get to the pier, you turn right and head towards UCSB. It is a very good spot for Bait and Wait fishing, but can also be good with plastics pending conditions. I am heading out there right now. Hope to see you there.

Here is an aerial view of the "Rock Slab" I was referring to. Fish that whole stretch of beach and from the rock itself. This picture is from a report on Pierfishing.com from today. This is Martin. Very cool dude. You will probably bump into to him this summer. Hope this helps. And by the way. There will be a Pierfishing.com Get-together at Goleta Beach on July 12. We will be meeting at area D. Come on by and meet the Goleta regulars and fellow members from Pierfishing.com. It should be a good time and fishing should be good. Rockfish opening up! Take care.

This is Martin's (GreenRag) report ...

Fished West Goleta Beach next to the Rock from the 9am high tide through the 3pm low tide. Used my new 13' pole won at Catalina, 10# test, high-low leaders and medium size sand crabs. Fishing was fantastic - same bites as yesterday but this time I went to bigger hooks (#4's) and started landing more of them. Yesterday I got a 13" sandbass and a 13.5" Sargo at the same spot. This area is right next to Group Area 'D' where we will be holding the Get-Together ... maybe we will have fresh-caught halibut at the BBQ :)

I want to thank Frank (Thresher) and Garrit (Leopard King) of All Surffishing.com for the best surf pole I have ever had!

Martin (GreenRag)
