#96, "October 28, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Sometimes I wonder why I always go on the internet and blab about the bite at Margarita. It's probably because the lake is so far from anywhere that even if people felt motivated by my reports to go to the lake, they couldn't!
Well I only fished for 2 hours today but today marked the beginning of a very special time at Margaria. What I'm talking about is the time when the bass start feeding on the planter trout and consequently eating the AC Minnow!!
I started out today across from the marina. I was throwing my custom painted 7" AC Minnow on 25 pound triple fish. The wind was up and the water was much cooler than two weeks ago. Things seemed right and when a 5 pound fish busted out of the weeds and rolled on my plug but missed, I had that funny feeling like today was going to be something special. 10 minutes later on a nothing piece of bank I'm watching the lure and it dissapears inside the maw of a lit up green and black grande sized bass! I figure eighted her back and forth at the boat and lipped her. On the scale she went 5 pounds 8 ounces, my best fish since February! I was really excited needless to say. I took her back to the marina real quick for some photos and a careful release. She swam away strong and I was back on the water. 5 casts later my minnow takes another crushing from a 3-14 in the marina cove. Hey when it's on its on. It was slow after that for a bit but I picked up three more fish right before I headed in at 2-14, 2-2, and 2-2. Ended the day with 16 and a half for 5 fish, one of my best limits at Margarita ever.
Two things helped me today. The first was focus. After that first fish missed my bait I was jumping up and down in the boat but I stayed cool and kept doing the second key thing, which was making good casts with a soft presentation. This, I am starting to believe, can be critical when fishing the big trout lures. Trout don't come bombing out of the sky in a bass' world. They come cruising down the bank stupidly. I make short casts 50 to 75 feet and cut the lure short so it lands gently in the water. The retrieve is straight and steady from there on in... Until they attack it!

Here's a pic of the 5-8, thanks to Clayton at Angler's Outpost for taking it for me since I didn't have a camera
