#7660, "what kind of bass are these?"
Sun Jan-12-03 01:43 AM by Tsunami

i was reading an article on bass fishing in Australia and they are catching some interesting looking bass. Kinda looks like smallmouths but they arent bronze, but they have a smaller mouth like the smallies. Can anyone tell me what species of bass this is?

I don't know what they are but the more washed out looking ones look like white perch. They catch them up in the North East. I can't tell for sure if thats what these fish are though. Depending on the color some of these fish some them resemble crappie. They look like a bass/ crappie hybrid.

I read a post that included some pics about a year ago on another board. The person posting the pics was from Australia and he said that their bass are not like the ones here in the states. Some of the pics he put up looked similar to ones you have.

Hey guys...It sure seems interesting how things differ from country to country. Keep in mind that what we call bass may not be the same as what others call bass. In fact...I'm thinking that they may not be the same at all. But I guess the folks "down undah" love their bass fishing all the same! Here's a link to another web site that shows more of the fish as well as info on the Australian Bass Association.

Hey there Tsunami,

Grom85 is right on the money with the nativefish site. It's got pictures, links, etc. I've fished for barrmundi that haunts brackish waters in north eastern Australia. Only one other place in the world has the same species as the one in Australia down to a T. Where does the other fish inhabit?

Answer: Hokaido, Japan Believe it or not!
