#7056, "6/2 at the Oceano Lagoon"

Went with PAH to the lagoon to see who was home. PAH was in the water by 5pm and I jumped in a half an hour later. The weeds have grown quite a bit in there and it feels like velvet. The stuff is weird, as it doesn't matter what you throw, that lure/bait will get wrapped in the stuff. We tried around the island, PAH working the east side and I worked the west, but the moss was too much. We then went under the bridge to the north side.
On the north side, the weeds weren't as prominent. The duckweed is beginning to form on the water and according to a lady who lives nearby, the weeds we keep snagging up with will sink in the next couple of weeks and the duckweed will begin to take over. As we began to work the east arm, PAH tried the peninsula while I worked the shore. PAH ended up hooking a 1.6 & a 1.9 pound bass in some wood while I caught a 1.0 and a 1.7 in the tules. On our way back PAH tried one more spot where he got hit earlier and ended up hooking his fish. It was over a pound and all were caught on Senkos. PAH was throwing 5" bubble gum and I was throwing a 7" chartreuse.
A good way to spend a Sunday evening.

Mickster,
Sounds like more fun than I've been having lately! Did you try frogs on any of the floating stuff? Sometimes there can be a good frog bite in the lagoon.

I did tie on a frog and skirted & popped it across the mats, but no one was interested. It was at that time and after PAH was getting hit on the Senko that I switched. We were surprised that no one was interested under the trees.
Perhaps you could shed some light on these "water rats" we're seeing. I don't think their beaver (although there may be one or two in there based on the cut trees from the water side). They kinda look like beaver except they have a tail like an opossum.
Any ideas?

Muskrats, they have habits like beavers including building things and they like to burrow into the sides of the bank.

Muskrats, huh? I was guessing fresh water otters. Usually they are about 18" long from head to tip of tail, with their head about the size of a lemon. Generally, they take off if you get near them, however, when Mick and I were there last time one surfaced right between us and headed straight for Mick. It didn't care that we were there and this one was huge. I'd say it was about the size of my dog (border collie/black lab mix, 56 #s). Pretty freaky.

Still sound like Muskrats?

Oh yeah, they have medium brown fur.

The small guys are surely muskrats, but the big one sure wasn't. Beavers get that big but if it didn't have the flat tail the only other thing I know of are nutrias. I don't know if they occur around here but they are an exotic species from Asia and are a plauge in Oregon and other locales. Sounds like you might want to take a baseball bat or some other protection if they are coming after you!
