#61, "August 25, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today I fished with Elwyn a member of the illustrious hen slayers. We got out around 4pm and motored our way over past white oak to fish some of the steep rock bank down there. I threw the 5" brown/clear big hammer and he fished a white/grey speed trap. We worked all the way to jackass canyon for nothing and then crossed the lake and fished the cove in there. Slow all the way through it until we're coming out the other side and I farmed a smallish bass on a buzzbait. Then on a point down from there I'm thinking I have a big clump of weeds behind my buzzbait but it's a solid 3 bass that proceeds to chase it right to the boat and eyeball it before swimming off. So basically we were sucking so we headed to the sticks in the narrows and throw topwater but that was dead too. Finally around 7:30 we were working back towards the main lake and I hooked up a decent bass on the big hammer. Guess what, that one jumped and got away about 2 seconds after hooking up. We were less than money for sure. By 8 we had worked most of the walls so we cut across and I finally nailed a fish which went 2lb 15oz on a long cast parallel to the bank. It's getting really dark now so we pull around to the wall area and I farm another one because my drag got magically backed off (gotta love the corsair reel eh?). Then Elwyn gets in there and sticks one on the speed trap and we called it a night. <BR>Except for last night the bite has been much tougher than usual at Margarita. The fish that have been active have been in 10-15 feet of water off steep walls. Beyond that there has been no discernable pattern that I have discovered. The thing that's so hard is finding active fish. For the amount of water we covered today to boat 2 fish you have to know that your lure is swimming itself past a whole lot of fish that just aren't biting. Be out there again Friday, maybe I can figure it out =)
