#57, "August 16, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today the weather was very nice at the lake. Hot with some breeze on the main lake but fairly calm in the coves. I was pretty determined today to catch some jig fish and after talking to one of the locals who has caught two 5 pounders last week on poppers off the "wall" in the narrows, I headed up there to flip. I flipped down the wall with a brown/orange jig with a berkeley select craw trailer and had no bites. Then I switched to a brown 1/2oz proline jig with a christmas tree colored yamamoto grub trailer and flipped my way back up the wall picking apart any tree structure that I saw. Still nothing. On my next pass I threw the 5" fish trap on the outside stuff but still nothing. I guess Dave musta caught em all! So this time I just kept working back up the lake to the sticks trying some different baits and sorta fooling around. In the sticks I switched to a big spook in the grey/clear which drew some interest from some smaller fish which splashed at it but didn't bite. Then I had a nice blowup but the fish missed, I kept walking the spook quickly back and boom a football type 3 pounder ate it up. Next cast another missed bite and the next cast another. After this flurry but only one fish landed, I worked the sticks pretty thouroughly with the spook but couldn't find any more active fish. Coming back on the spot where I had missed the bites I switched to a shad colored skitter pop for a more subtle presentation. Six or seven casts to the same spot and a 2-5 finally ate it. That was all the action I had in the narrows for the day. I threw the spook in one of the side coves across and down from Cold Canyon for an hour or so but they just weren't charging it.
So around 5 I drove the boat back down to Salsipuedes and threw a 5" brown/clear big hammer on a one oz head. Only had two bites and they came on back to back casts. I landed the first one a 2 pounder and missed the second one. I threw the frog in the cheeze mats but no joy there either. Around 6pm I packed it out and headed home. Pretty tough mid-day bite in general. I think next time I go I'll focus on the later part of the day and maybe throw some speed traps, something I haven't done in a few weeks.
Here's a side note. The WON bass Central Coast Region tournaments start September 18 on San Antonio. My boat (a 14" aluminum) is obviously not big enough to tournament fish but I would very much like to fish these tourney's this year. So basically if you have a bass boat and need a partner, I would love to talk to you and would be willing to share expenses as well as my knowledge of Santa Margarita. Email me at rbelloni@calpoly.edu if you are interested. I would really appreciate it.
Rob
