Lower Otay: top water Got to the lake just before 6:00AM and it was packed -- there must have been a tournament -- I've never seen a lake so crowded... We tried getting a boat but they were all reserved... asked out. We ended up shorefishing the end of Harvey arm (bridge area) for a bunch of 2 pounders -- all on poppers and spooks. The fish were hitting the lures almost immediately but you had to get it out pretty far to get to em.. It was wide open for the first 1/2 hour or so... If we didn't get hit right away we didn't get hit at all. The weeds were really really thick here and areas to fish from shore is very limited. I tried fishin a big hammer but would end up catching weeds within the first couple reels everytime. We fished for a couple hours and headed off to Miramar.
Word of advice from the boat office: "If you're gonna fish here and you need a rental boat call in advance to reserve a boat. We don't have many with motors to start off with and they are mostly reserved by the time the lake opens."
Miramar: Slow By the time we got to the lake it was about 10:00AM.. a little late. From what I've experienced at Miramar during the summer it's either early in the morning or later in the evening when bass fishing seems to be better. The water was really clear as usual and it was a little windy. There were others on the lake fishing for catfish mostly on the peirs.. I saw only one other guy fishing for bass at Mo's.. he reported 3, all 2-3 pounders, on plastics and poppers. We hit Mo's hole, the small concrete pier, and the last pier for nada. The only spot where the bass seemed a little more active was Mo's hole. You'll almost always see baitfish getting slaughtered here.
There was a 10 pounder sitting underneath the last pier but looked pretty content sitting on his spot. The only time it moved was when I tossed something at it.. but it would swim away. I've seen huge bass at Miramar but a lot of these fish have made the docks and peirs their homes so they see everything being thrown out and they are a lot more cautious as to what they eat -- even live bait. Shorefishing Miramar can be frustrating sometimes especially if you have people fishing for catfish or trout with like a hundred rods each all soaking bait. The shoreline is lined with tules so shorefishing is very limited. You'll either need to rent a boat or floattube it to access the rest <80%> of the lake.
