We'll I finally got out on Sunday, with Mrs. CJ (Angie), and my friend Ken. We went out to a private lake in Irvine, which Ken is a member, and caught a few bass from morning to noon.

The topwater bite only produced one fish, a nice four pounder, but it sure felt like it should have been better. Angie did hook up early throwing her 4" Osprey(she loves that bait), and the rip bait and drop shot accounted for several more nice fish. These fish here pull like hell, and most were in the three pound class.

Anyhow, it also gave me a chance to break out my new digital, don't have all the features figured out so forgive me if the images are lousy. Here it goes.

No, not Oso, but a members only lake over by the toll road. Believe me, if the fish at Oso pulled like these guys I'd be out there a lot more often.

About time we got a fish report :-) So what camera did you decide on? I know on mine I've got the option to transfer the images at different sizes, but I usually transfer em at the largest and then downsize em in paintshop. I think with rob's he has the option to actually shoot at a certain size, and then he downsizes that for the web. Either way, it's an extra step before posting, but makes for pretty pitchers :-)

Brian, I got the Canon Powershot A40 2.0 meg. I have the ability to downsize the picture with the software program on the computer, but I didn't pay attention to the image size before I saved them to disk. Will have smaller pictures from now on. Now all I gotta know is how to install my own "Team Big Bait" logo on my posts. We are not Fascist Pigs!!!!!

BTW Rattlesnake is the correct answer. Pretty cool lake, but you gotta go with a member. Unless you're lucky enough to be one of the 25 members. I hear Syphon lake down the road is good also.

haha. I can make you a BWW logo... All you do is make a pic that's 48px by 48px or whatever it's supposed to be, and upload it to the site, then in your profile there's a line for 'avatar image' and you just put in the location of the image.

Don't forget, before you put that location in your profile, to take out the space between cal and fishing. If I just type the whole thing out, it automatically shows the image in the message. Glad you got out and did some fishin. Always nice to just go catch a couple.

A few tips for photos.

When you get your picture from digital camera or a scanner, it's going to be a large size, pixel wise and file size wise. For example, say your camera shoots at 1200x1600 pixels. Think of that as 12 inches by 16 inches if you printed it out or looked at it on your screen, it's big! The file size is going to be around 200k. In megabytes that is .2 megabytes. It's a big file for the internet and for people who are on 56k lines.

Now think a little about resolution on your monitor. If you have a nice 19 inch monitor, you can run it at 1200x1600 resolution. This equates directly to the 1200x1600 that your camera. So that pic should take up your entire screen. Now in the real world most people have 15 or 17 inch monitor and run them at 800x600 pixels. So that 1200x1600 pic would be going way off the screen in that case.

Ideally on the internet your picture should be between 300 and 500 pixels wide. I post most of my pics at 425 pixels wide. I don't worry about the heighth. I let the software that I use figure out the height based on the width. Every image editing program should have an option to resize your pics. Within that option it should have something that says "maintain aspect ratio". This means that when you resize from 1200x1600 and you say you want the width to be 400, it will automatically adjust the height to about 533 pixels. Thus the ratio of width to heigth stays the same and the pic doesn't look distorted.

Another good tip is to use the crop feature before you resize the pic. If you have a pic at 1200x1600 and you and the fish are only taking up the middle of the pic, no one really cares about the background (unless they're trying to poach your spot :-) ) But seriously.. If you use the crop feature on the 1200x1600 image and frame you and the fish in the middle, the resulting file might be like 800x1100 for example. Then you do your resize, and the pic winds up looking really good as if it was perfectly centered and up close. If you just take the original 1200x1600 and resize it, you wind up looking much smaller. Make sense?

Sweet!!!! Thanks for the help guys. It's kinda lame to have such big pictures for such small fish. Now I've just got to catch a bass big enough to warrant a big spread.

speaking of fish pulling hard I fished friday evening and caught a solid 2 pound fish The fish looked like he had never been caught before clean looking and pulled hard, I dont know where the heck he came from... but I hope there is more?

Ya chris nice fish there bruddah!!! Your killing me w/ the private lake action. Theres so many private litte fishing holes around orange county and the surrounding area. Ive found myself many a time driving by some of those places looking in just going "only if" (sigh). Oh well i guess its back to reality and off to Perris i go hahahaha, by the way this is Brian. I was out in the back of the store w/ Kevin and you casting that jig last weekend. Keep sticking em at these places and keep posting em so we can all drool.

SJ and Fishtrax, I don't know what is up with the vivid coloration of my fish, and the more standard color of Angie's. Most bass will act like chameleons and color themselves to their environment, bass in dirty water get more pale, and clear water bass can be more green. These fish were also caught at different times of day, and with different presentations, but on the same small body of water. I've noticed a lot of bass I catch on reaction baits are more lit up than those caught on worms or jigs. Do bass show emotion in their coloring, kind of like how a marlin lights up when chasing bait? I don't know, but by having bass in our tank at BWW, I've seen them change coloring often, and usually each fish has a different "home color".

I like the Canon pretty well so far. The best price I saw on it was $269 on outpost.com. The models that were a hundred or so dollars more expensive didn't really have any additional features, just a smaller, lighter camera model. I think I got good value for the money. Am still figuring it all out though. Canon seems to be one of the better makers on the market. I looked at Kodak, Fuji, Olympus, Nikon and others on a consumer reports web site. Definetly a good investigation tool. C-YA.
