#43, "July 19, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today it was a solo mission to the lake. This instantly presented a problem when I tried to launch my boat. The lake had dropped about a foot since last week leaving me high and dry. When I pushed the boat it just dug the stern into the mud further and further. 10 minutes of jumping up and down on the bow and I got it launched. I picked up a Castaic gizzard shad at Wilderness Outfitters last week so I headed over by the dam to try it out. Second cast I had two followers about 2 pounds but they didn't bite it. The lure was running crooked ( typical for these Castaic Lures ) so I tuned it and kept fishing it. Had two more small fish follow it up before getting tired of fishing slow and switching to the speed trap. First bite was a bluegill and after that nothing for while. I was getting kind of pissed after the first hour so I made a move over to the swimming pool cove. Bingo. Next two hours fishing the chrome/black speed trap resulted in 10 bass, 6 in the 10-13" range and the other 4 from 2-2.5 pounds. I missed two fish and one was a grande sized one. I made a cast along the weedline and got bit, but the fish spit the lure out when I set the hook. As I'm casting back to the same spot I see a fish boil. Three cranks and blammo, I got tagged. The fish came up and pushed some serious water around and then dove into the weeds and the hook pulled out in the same instant. So that kinda sucked but the bite was excellent. When I got to the mouth of the cove I pulled up the trolling motor and headed in to the marina for a last shot at it. The last 10 minutes of the day and I stuck two 3 pounders, one of which made a nice V in the water as it rushed out from the weeds to attack the trap. All fish were carefully released.
Wow, will this bite ever end? I'm probably jinxing myself as I write this.
See you on the water...
