#3414, "Irvine lake float tourney 3/23/02"

Arrived at 5am. 20th car in line. Crowd was light. Mostly all float tube people in line for the tourney. Gate opens at 6:05am. Went to the "new" spring lake, but I was diappointed to find out it's a extension of the flats, just a deeper basin. Decided to hit west shore instead. First hook-up in less than 30 minutes. 1lber. Second hook-up came 15 minutes later. After about 3 -4 hook-ups of average 1-2lb'ers, moved down the westshore towards the middle. Found a honey hole, and "Bang"! Bite was on. At one point I caught 1 fish and examing the weight for possible weigh in, Bang! another hook-up! My poles were dunking like Shaq hanging on the rim in the NBA! One fish gave me a run. For 5 minutes fighting the fish, the 2lber was leaping out of the water 3-4ft in the air at least 3x. Finally the fish tired out and had it in the net. Inflated nightcrawlers were the ticket, and the ones with black ends to them. For some reason the ones with black ends had better response. Cut them in half, works better. By 1:45p.m. I had double limits and a well satisfied day of fishing.
The fish that I had did not qualify, though if I weighed in earlier, the one fish of my limit would have been 2.5lb's. I waited, and the fish lost weight in the water during the day of fishing. I was stoked though, I did WIN a shimmano reel for my son when he is ready to fish. NO trophies like the advertisement said, but some descent prizes sponsored by sport challet.
