#305, "May 20-21, Bass-N-Tubes Clear Lake"

FINALLY, a bass-n-tubes with no wind or rain or hail!!! the weather was gorgeous both days for this two day event (ask me how gorgeous tomorrow when my sun burns kick in...). i believe there were 4 or 5 guys from the sonoma club and a total of 17 anglers. we launched from the campsite which was really nice. the site was in the keys.
Day 1
launch was at 5:30 on saturday and weigh in at 4. carp were spawning and splashing around in the shallows which seemed to deter the bass. i threw just about everything in the morning. i started out flippin brush hogs and stuff in the morning, no fish. i switch to some baits that'd cover water like blades and cranks, no fish. dragged brush hogs, guess what? no fish. well, my confidence wasn't all the greatest by around noon time. i think i got like one fish to bite site fishing with a brush hog, but didn't stick. i jumped out of my tube and stood on the shore to see if i could get a better look at some fish to site fish for em. saw one 3 pounder that wasn't quite latched onto a bed and would take off every cast. i moved down the bank and i see like 15 fish which at first glance i thought were bass and for a split second i was like YES!!!! but, unfortunately all but one were catfish. they were all like 12 inch catfish and there was a fatty bass chasing them around, trying to eat them!!! i kid you not, most of these catfish were WHITE with bite marks from that bass. at first i thought the bass was a 3 pounder, cause i didn't get a good look at her. the next time i saw her i thought she'd go 4. after i worked her for a while i realized it was a 5 pound fish. i threw a 4 inch power worm after experimenting with different baits and finally got her to take. after a FUN fight on 10 pound test in pretty heavy cover, i got her up and threw her in the livewell. SWEETNESS. well, i site fished for some smaller fish but didn't get bit. i went back to a spot where i knew there was one small fish on a bed and two more that were still in pre spawn. couldn't get bit so i gave up and covered some water to look for fish. couldn't find em. worked that bed fish for a while, still couldn't get him to stick. i got him to peck at my brush hog twice though, but by that time it was time to weigh in. E got big fish with a 7 something that would've gone 8 or maybe even 9 before spawn. my fish went 5.54. a couple other fives were weighed in as well as some 4s and 13 inchers. i think E had like a 12 pound bag with like 2 fish or something. john lake of course was in the top 3. charlie and darce were in the running also.
DAY 2
ok, i knew there were fish on that one spot so i decided to hit it hard today. as soon as there was enough sun light to see through the water, i was on it. i pulled that little fish off the bed which was barely 13 inches. there were still those two that would come through every now and then and i worked em for a good 2 hours. they'd come in like every 5 minutes or so. while i was waiting for em to come back one time, i look over, and they brough friends!!! i see 5 fish swimming toward me. a 4 pound female, two 3s and two small males. with my heart in my throat, i flip to em, trying to work the 4 pounder, no interest, moved to the next female, no interest, moved to the next female, no interest, ok, i'll try the males, still no fucking ##### ##### interest. that pissed me off. they were gone but now i had 3 pairs of fish that would take turns cruising through. a guy in a bass boat came in behind me and i stuck a 3. i had literally 10 inches of line out and i was dangling a bass assasin right in front of her. with that small amount of line out, it's very hard to control the fish. everything was right, i stuck it right in front of the guy in the bass boat which was cool, i got her right out of the cover perfectly, kept her in the water, she didn't jump, and the fuckin hook popped out. well i had the same fuckin thing happen with a small male and by the end of the day i weighed in one fish for like 1.15 pounds or some #####. some big fish were weighed in today. clint got a 7 and a 6 (which is cool, he didn't do to good the first day and i was givin him a hard time. good thing we didn't make a side bet, i was gonna give him 3 to 1 odds too). darce also got some solid 5s and john got a limit (surprise, surprise). i'm not sure of the exact final results, but it went something like john in first, darce second, eric third, charlie fourth. clint had big fish of day 2 (which was also big fish of the tournament) and eric had big fish of day 1. i think i ended up in like 9th or 8th or something.
well, although i didn't as well i should've, i can't blame myself cause it was only my second time at the lake and my first time at the keys. clear lake is always fun, and i'm looking forward to the next tournament. i'm faced with the decision of going to clear lake with my family next month, or fishing the bass-n-tubes at the delta. hhhhmmmmmm. that's a thinker.
