#282, "April 30th @ Margarita"

Weeds are growing!!! Yahoo!!! Fished from 5:15 to 7:30. Started in Jackass Canyon with jigs in the tules with no luck. My new trolling motor worked great though. Boat control, what a concept.
Next I headed back into the river channel trowing a popper. About 6:30, the bass started boiling on the opposite side of the channel, so I headed over and tried the popper some more, but no luck. So I switched to the castaic threadfin shad (3 1/2"). First cast got one. Second cast had another but lost it. By 7:30 I had two hit short, missed a hook set on one, lost two, but managed to board 5 large mouth, 1 crappie and 1 something else.
So can anyone tell me what the "something else" was. It's body was shaped like a catfish, but no wiskers. It had the markings on a largemouth except grey instead of green and the lateral line was not as prominent. It was about 20 inches long and weighed 4 to 5 pounds. It wasn't a striper.
Happy fishin'

I received an email yesterday from a friend who is experienced in fishing. I told him about the mystery fish PAH caught in Margarita and he replied by stating it quite possibly be a squawfish. Now a squawfish is not really a game fish but actually an oversized minnow. I showed PAH a picture of a squawfish taken in the Washington/Columbia River area and he replied by stating the shape is similar but the color was a little off. After, PAH thought about it and decided he should've kept him on the line and gone after Stripers!!

Dean at the marina has seen quite a few squawfish brought in over the years. The can get pretty good sized. Not too many of them in Margarita but they are there.
-Rob

I've caught squawfish on topwater baits at San Antone and S. Marg. They seem to like them slow when the water warms up. Glad to hear you got them, PAH. The evening of the 29th I got one about 5.5 and another about 4 on the big Rico. Didn't do as well PM of the 30th, but got some on poppers and ripbaits.
