#277, "April 22, Margarita"

Got a chance to go out with a buddy with a boat on Saturday. Were on the water by first light and did real well in the Jackass bay area using the "Baby Bass" super flukes again. Had about 12 fish (catch and release, of course) between the two of us by 11am, 3 of them in the 5 pound range. They were all up just off the clumps of reeds growing along the shore. Then the bite slowed down. We got another small one using a 6"worm...then my friend hooked onto a hog with a fluke. Measured it at 23", didn't have a scale. Had lots of fun...I'm promoting myself from "beginner" to "novice" bass fisherman!! :)
Ken A

THIS MAY SOUND ELEMENTARY, BUT HOW ARE YOU FISHING/RIGGING THE SUPER FLUKES?

I just started using these and was shown how by Pete over at Wilderness Outfitters in Arroyo Grande. I use no weight and just texas rig it with the hook point just exposed along the back of the fluke. I retrieve it very slowly and twitch it on the way back. It slowly sinks while it sits and climbs back to the surface on the retrieve. When it's twitched it jerks from side-to-side. Having just started, I've had lots of success with them, so naturally I use them a lot.
Ken A

Thanks for sharing your fluke rigging. I just fished Santa Margarita this evening and on my third cast, a crazy, plump 3.3 pounder went berzerk on my super fluke. I fished it just as you said, with shad colored (grey/white). That's all I caught though. I nearly got two others by sight fishing...males that were protecting their nests. They were defending against sunfish and small bass which I believe were trying to steal some eggs or newly hatched bass. Maybe I should try those "baby bass" colored super flukes? I'm used to using plastic worms fished real slow, and those bites are usually a lot less explosive.
