#16605, "Farming it"

Ive been thinking about this for sometime now. I dont get the analogy of saying "you farmed it" when you lose a fish. I just dont get this one.

Im certain it will be obvious once someone explains it.

Whoa, hold on there John. Its interesting you are the first one to reply, and heres why. When you wrote a summary on the tube site about your Fed Clear Lake tournament 2 years ago, you wrote that I farmed a fish!! Its true. And that may be the first time I heard somebody say that. So I actually was thinking about your comment, and was thinking that this farming thing is a Bay area thing.

Other than that, this thread was inspired by complete boredom in cubeland.

I was inspired to read, research and respond this post, for the same reason.

"Farming" may not just be a Bay Area thing as I have a friend that is from So-Cal who uses it all the time as well. He says he learned the expression while working on a party boat, but does not know why it is used.

Lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what have-yous

Farming = you should be a farmer rather than a fisherman.

I always thought that to "farm" a fish = any successful chance of landing your catch just bought the farm. Or your fish landing skills bought the farm.

My friends use "farming it" if you try to set the hook too soon and pull the bait out of the fishes mouth.

All it means is you let the fish get away so it can grow to be bigger. Your Farming it....or letting it grow, so you can harvest it later. Its definately a so-cal thing, it rubbed off onto me when i started hangin out with some so-cal guys. How bout this "I hella farmed that fish" haha hybrid.

Farming means to let a fish grow, like letting a crop grow. I know this because I live in Florida.

I used that term around Mountain bass when i was farming red-eye bass on 2" dropshot worms.

It has been used by Socal saltwater guys on the Local Sportboats since the early 90's and it was more closely associated with the term Farmer in the past. If one of the regulars on a boat kept loosing fish, the others on board would start calling him/ her a Farmer implying they have no place on boat and should have never left the Farm. As the term and meaning evolved Anglers started using the word farmed to describe lost fish it just kind of took off and stuck. I can't say for certain that it all started on the Socal Sportboats but if I had to guess I would say that's where it took root.

Thanks,
JerryG

Yep, I was using the term in the 70's. I grew up So-Cal near Venice beach. Fished out of the Marina Del Rey on the Betty'o and the Happy Man sport fishing boats. As long as I remember it was just a term to use. I guess I never thought of why it was said, it just sounded good LOL!

All I know is that it means you lost a fish. People have been saying that forever on the party boats in So-Cal.

We used to call people sabanero when they missed a fish too. That one came from a guy we knew in high school who had a huge mullet. We figured he was growing his hair out to sell it so we called him sabanero de pelo, or just sabanero for short. Try it out on your friends when they miss a fish some time. Just yell sabanero! Utter confusion.

On on this farm he had some Bass E I E I O...:P

Like others have been saying. I have heard the term since the early 90's and it just stuck. I hear it everywhere now. Who knows where or why it started, but more than likely it started on the sport boats down here in So-Cal. There is a whole different lingo on the boats down here.

My definition came from a guy who used to work out of virg's landing in moro bay. I guess this is one of histories mysteries though. It probly started with some guys screwin around like rob and his habenero or whatever.

You maybe right Ryan, I know along with saying you "farmed it" We also just said "You Farmer" I guess it just means you are not much of a fisherman LOL!! It was said to cap on or rub it in on the guy who just lost the fish was all. You have to pay attention when fishing, you are not out on a tractor plowing a field. I mean when we say "Thats Bad" it means good LOL! I don't think it will ever die no matter how it started LOL!

Best of luck you farmers LOL!
