#166, "January 16, 2000 Cachuma Lake"

I fished yesterday with the Santa Barbara Bass Club at their first tournament of the year on Lake Cachuma. My boater was Dennis Wright, a great fisherman and a guy who really knows the local lakes. Weather was overcast all day and felt like rain, but it never did. We took off sometime around 7 and ran up to Santa Cruz bay. Dennis was throwing a jig so I tied on the "Matt Peters special" 3/8oz brown proline with a brown/purple fleck yamamtoto twintail. I got bit pretty quick but the fish fell off after a couple seconds. A few yards down the bank I get bit again and put this one in the boat, a 3 pounder. Dennis sticks a clone about 5 minutes later and we are feeling pretty good. It slowed down for the next hour or so until we moved across to the other side of the bay and Dennis picked up another one about 3. Working the same area I get thunked and set the hook on a good fish. It pulled some drag on 12 and I was thinking oh yeah, it's on. Then it spit the hook. UGhh.
Well things slowed down after about 9am and we fished all over the upper end of the lake throwing jigs mostly. Dennis broke one off around 1 up in the narrows and I had a nice follow up all the way to the boat on my 7" ac minnow. The fish kept slashing at it but wouldn't quite eat it. Maybe it was because I was throwing it on 30lb =).
With 45 minutes to go we went back to our area in Santa Cruz and sure enough Dennis gets another one about a pound and a half. Minutes later, there I go again farming another jig bite. This one swam it right at me.
At weigh in there were some really quality fish brought to the scales. Apparently the best bite was on big spinnerbaits up shallow. There were 2 limits and 17 of 21 guys and gals weighed in fish. Big fish was a litte over 6lb taken on a splitshot rig and big smallmouth was a 3 pounder even on a jig.
I'm still learning everyone's names so you'll have to bear with me in the photos department.
Here's the winner Brian (far left) with his 15 pound limit

The second place finisher (far left) with another nice limit

Big fish - A 6 largemouth

Pat with two nice ones on spider jigs I think

And me - just happy not to have blanked
