check out the tail on this fish. not only that, but it was skinny, and it's back was bent.. what do you guys think caused the tail issue?

I would guess it got munched on by a bird when it was small and just healed "back" that way...

I caught a fish pretty similar to that one but without the forked tail. It's back was bent at pretty much a 45 degree angle. I also caught a fish at one of our ponds with a weird tumor thing on its back. That fish was also really really dumb, it got caught 3 times in two days, twice on the same spinnerbait and once on a Senko.

I would guess that the fish was born like that. For it to have 2 deformities like that leads me to believe that it is a result of mutation or error that occurred in the gamete or the larval development stage, rather than scarring. You run into fish like that from time to time.

MtBass, those were my thoughts exactly.

Considering the water quality in most of CA, congenital deformties are probably very common.

During my high school years I fished a private residential lake pretty often and caught tons of bass exhibiting congenital deformities. I guess all the backyard fertilizer runoff combined with a small population and gene pool size (among other factors) all contributed...

You're welcome :+

I agree with what has been said above about that fish in the top picture being some sort of mutant fish. At first I thought maybe it's tail could have been split by a net but the gap between the halves of the tail is unnaturally wide. Weird lookin fish.

Rob's fish looks like it has a tumor or cancer of some kind. Is wish I had some of my pic of the freaks that I caught. I caught the same rainbow last year and this year that I called stubby. She had no tail fin just a stub. She 20" the first time and 23" the second time and she was doing well for having no tail. I hope to catch her again next year.}(
