#14864, "CANAL FISHING!?!?!?!"

HEY GUYS

I LIVE IN SAN DIEGO AND FISH ALL THE LOCAL LAKES, BUT MY WIFES FAMILY LIVES IN BRAWLEY CALIFORNIA, WHICH IS NEAR EL CENTRO CALIFORNIA.

I HAVE A BOAT AND WOULD LIKE TO FISH THE COLORADO RIVER SOON!

BUT, WHERE I NEED HELP IS WHEN I GOTO TO BRAWLEY I FISH CANALS AND I WOULD ASSUME THEY ARE ONLY TEN FEET AT MOST IN THE MIDDLE, THE CANALS ARE PROBABLY 100 FEET WIDE AND HAVE SOME GRASS ON THE EDGES, I HAVE CAOGHT PLENTY OF SMALLIES AND SOME LARGEMOUTH AND EVEN A COUPLE SMALL STRIPERS. ALL THE FISH ARE VERY SMALL, BRAWLEY IS VERY HOT AND SOMETIMES GETS 120 DEGREES IN THE SUMMER. ANYWAY, DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS, BY THE WAY, THESE CANALS HAVE DROPS WHERE THERE IS WHITEWATER. I DONT KNOW IF THAT MAKES SENSE????

I HAVE CAUGHT FISH ON SPINNERBAITS, RATTLE TRAPS, SENKOS, BUT NOTHING OVER 1LB AND 1/2. i HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN A FISH OVER A PUND AND 1/2.

ANYWAY, YOUR EDUCATED THOUGHTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

THANKS

I live in central California and I fish a lot of canals here for bass. In one of the main canals I fish I had a similar problem fish were present, but finding anything with any size was a challenge. I solved this problem just through a lot of time and effort getting to know the area and in my case the larger Bass were not holding deep, they were holding a large floating mound of water hiasan that only has 5-7 feet under it. I also upsized my bait. I used to throw 4-5" worms and now I throw nothing but 7-8" plastics. Since finding where they were holding and uping my bait size my average has gone up dramatically in that canal.
As far as the white water is concerned Strippers will hold there, but the LMB tyically won't. I have noticed they prefer calmer water, or off on the side of the running water in eddies.
I hope i have been some help to you. Good luck.

Thanks for the ADVICE...

I USUALLY FISH THE ALL AMERICAN CANAL OR THE HIGHLINE CANAL. DO YOU EVER FISH THESE CANALS, AND DO YOU EVER FISH ANY OF THE LAKES, I THINK ITS CALL WEISS LAKE.

ALSO WHERE DO THE BASS SPAWN, IF THE WATER IS ALWAYS FLOWING.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE..

I am in the central valley and the canals i fish if they have names i don't know them...found them via dumb luck.

As far as spawning is concerned they are going to spawn anywhere that provides a good bottom and a break in the current such as a log or rock pile that blocks the currentor large bend.
