#12366, "Hodges report"

Date: 2-7-04

Launch and Return: Launched around 7am, returned about 5pm

Total: 2 Largemouths, first one about 6#, second one about 4.5#

Plastics: Fish #1 came on a watermelon/white laminate Senko tossed at a stick-up, other Senkos and the Ika produced bites, but no other takers. Dropshotted much of the day, for lots of crappie hits, and a couple nicer bites that I farmed. Finished with a C-rigged lizard.

Spinnerbaits: Fish #2 came on a 1/4oz white w/chart. belly and w/double chrome willows made by Matsuo. Also tossed some heavier ones in various colors for a couple bumps.

Crankbaits: Trolled and tossed a couple different ones, notta bump.

Scent: a little Anise Smelly Jelly every once in a while on the plastics

Conditions: Started off in the mid-30's (read cold), but once the sun came up the layers started coming off. By noon it was hot in the sun, but probably only 68ยบ in the shade.

Special Comments: First fish came on 3rd or 4th cast. #2 didn't come until around 1pm while I took a standing break at the dam. Then a guy to my left caught nice one, 5mins later I did, then 5mins later the guys buddy on the other side of me caught a nice one (these were their first fish of the day.

Both my fish came on classic patterns, The Senko fish hit it on the drop as the bait bumped the stick. The blade fish hit when I popped the bait off the rock it was hung on.

For an opening day I guess it wasn't too bad, but every point seemed to have a couple folks on it. For a lake with very small points for the most part, this wasn't a great deal. This issue will die in a couple weeks I'd guess.

My new Cuda 240s/gps worked pretty good considering. I slammed it in the night before with some 5min epoxy. I need to redo the puck, too many bubbles. It was sweet to finally have a GPS, and to have it as part of the FF was way cool. I found out I paddle the Cabo about 3mph while paddling at a more or less cruising speed. That was with the kitchen sink on board too.

This was also my first time using my Shimano Clarus' for largemouths. I have to say that for $60-70, these are the best rod on the market for light saltwater and freshwater. Tons of backbone where I like it, but almost as sensitive as my Iovino Doodlin' rods. I loved them in the salt, but the real test was this weekend, and they passed with flying colors.

Areas fished: Everything, but the west flats and Arm East of floating bathroom.

Those are a couple of nice fish, Ed. Where did they direct you to put in, at the remaining ramp or over in the dam arm? Did you sling "Mikey" at all?
