I want to catch some Stripers, maybe some Largemouth too. Where should I go? Don't really feel like fishing with Chovies. Would rather catch some shad for bait or throw topwater all day, are they running anywhere? The Shad were really small the last time I went to Castaic and Pyramid, haven't fished Silverwood for years....Any Suggestions??????? I will be fishing from my boat.....

If you plan on catching fish on lures your best bets are probably silverwood or Pyramid you'll need to get there either very early in the morning or in the late afternoon or evening. It's a great time to throw topwater which is the is my personal favorite freshwater fishing technique. Unfortunately through out the year there are only small windows of opportunity when topwater becomes a high percentage technique. It's that time of the season now and It's all about time of day early and late. Poppers, walkers, skitters, Jitters, Soft Jerks, lipless cranks, ECT. they will all work. Some better then others depending on the day. Just get out there and walk or pop. It's mostly small fish right now but in good numbers. Schoolies are agressive and if you find yourself in the right place at the right time it can go off.

As far as spots go you just have to get out there and find them. You can read about it on the internet but by the time you have read it chances are the fish have moved to a new area and when you get there you find that you waisted your morning fishing the spot that was on a few days before along with the all the others who read the report and are on the same spot all wondering when the fish are going to start biting. If it's very early or very late and your not seeing any surface activity (bait or breaking fish) your best bet is to keep looking. I've always felt that the most successful Anglers are those who have put the most time on the water. It sure doesn't hurt to fish unfamaliar waters with someone who has it figured out either. Good luck! See you guys on the water.

If your looking to fish with shad, go to Castaic....I was just there for a club tourney and there's tons of shad balls up in the backs of coves....just go look in the fisharm.

WellFairFisher,

Read the bottom half of this post:

http://www.calfishing.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=2&topic_id=2149&mesg_id=2149&page=

We have returned to the same spot three times since, and the Strippers are still there. Easy limits with the jackpot fish going to TomCod with an 8# Stripper and NosCrazyBranden got a bonus 3# LMB.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys guys. Hey Gerr, how big were the Shad??? If there too small I can't net em. I know Pyramid pretty well but the fish have been pretty small and the boat traffic there is crazy. In my little 12ft boat it gets a little dangerous. I have a boat but no truck to tow it with so i'm at the mercy of my friends that want to go and are willing to tow. If I had a good truck I would be fishing Pyramid and Castaic 3-4 times a week. I'm thinkin Wednesday. If anyone else is goin and want to team up on em, let me know....Thanks and keep the tips and reports comin in......Warren
