#103, "November 6, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today was one of those very enjoyable days at the lake. My buddy Matt Peters came out with me, there was hardly anyone at the lake, the fish bit pretty good and the weather was nice and even a bit cold in the evening. After all the AC Minnow action of the last two trips to the lake, they just didn't want to bite it today but we found 'em anyway. <BR>The marina cove yielded no bass for us so we moved over by the white oak area and fished whats left of the outer weedlines. Right away I hook and lose a pretty decent fish on the 5" swimbait when it came up and shook it's head. A few casts later I get this funky bite and I think it's weeds till the fish is practically to the boat, a decent 2 pounder. Then Matt proceedes to teach me a crankbait lesson with his deep little N and sticks three fish in a row. Two of them were nice two pound fish with the other one about a pound and a half. So they were biting pretty good for about 45 minutes and after a while we decided to move on and fish up past Salsipuedes. This area was slow so we moved inside Salsipuedes to look for more outer weed lines but didn't find anything exciting. I caught a small one on the swimbait as we worked out towards the main lake. Coming to the main lake we found some of the right stuff on the fish finder and Matt gets a nice bite on his crank and I get one about 2 and a half on the fish trap. Then it was back down the lake to the area across from the marina where I picked up yet another swimbait fish same size as the last few. Matt made a good effort and did all the right things with the 7" AC minnow but they didn't want to play that game today. We finished off in the swimming pool cove but couldn't find any more biters. All in all a very enjoyable day at the lake with Matt ketchin bass, enjoying Santa Margarita, and learning a thing or two about crankbait fishin.
