#1528, "July 1, 2001 - Calero"

Well I've seen a lot about there being a lot of jet skiiers and water skiiers etc at Calero on weekends but I took a gamble and headed over there this afternoon. Luckily I think a lot of people had already gone home. I launched my kickboat at the ramp and headed back into the big cove, don't know the name. Only my second time to Calero. Anyway, I threw the 9" Slammer because it just looked perfect for it. Windy, weedbeds, chop on the water, afternoon, hot. Yes it came together nicely when a 4-12 unloaded on it. Nice fish but still very spawned out looking. Could have been 6+. I was pumped though, haven't caught one on the plug in a while. Fished the whole big bay and across to the other side where another decent fish gave the plug a whack. A fatter 2-4 came to the boat. The more I use my Calstar 800L the more I am liking it. Rock solid on the hookset with 25lb test. Fished back across in some stiff wind. Finally put down the trout and threw some 5" big hammers. I missed one really nice bite and that was it. Called it an afternoon at 7:30. I think I need to go to Calero some more. Today proves once again that there doesn't have to be trout in a lake for them to hit the slammer. It also proves that I'm willing to share good info with the people who visit my site. Just think, I'm letting the cat out of the bag on the wood bite at Calero!! Next thing barnis will be buying $30 lures and $200 rods and ruining the fishing. NOT
See ya on the water :-)

Calero!! There are definatly some big girls swimming there. My personal best came from there, 11.6#. I have caught 2 10+ from Calero both on Kalins grubs, rigged on a wide gap 1/8 oz. round head jig, swimming the grub through the tops of the submerged weeds. I believe the grub is a good imitation of the shad that are so plentiful there. I won't go to Calero without having one rigged. I'm thinking I should start tossing "Slammers" also, big baits catch big fish. right?
Where can I get the Slammer around the south bay, or tri valley area.

Mitch

Hey Mitch,
Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you at the bassntubes tourney. They have slammers at Coyote Bait. 9" Dark Trout is the one to get. I'm not sure what it is about Calero but there must be something in there that makes the bass hit trouts and swimbaits. Some lakes have it and some lakes don't. Calero definitely does.
