Well, here's the result of my city college web design class.

http://dac.sbcc.net/students/blong

Unfortunately we only had IE to preview in at the school, so Netscape funks up a couple things. Definitely best viewed in IE ;-) Lacks in content right now because toward the end of the semester I pretty much had to re-design the whole thing (dang critiques...) and I didn't have time to add all the articles and pictures I wanted to. Once I get a copy of dreamweaver in order here at home I'll update some stuff and figure out what Netscape's problem is. But, for now, it's somethin to look at.

Hey, great looking site Brian!! Looks pretty dang polished to me even if you say it's got aways to go. You can only accomplish so much in a semester. I know that all too well.

Did you use an html editor program like the ones available from Macromedia & Ulead or did the coarse require you to write all the code from scratch? Either way it looks great!

I put together my little site before I even knew that html editing programs existed. Man those things would sure save a guy some time.
I really liked your roll over buttons (I think that's what you call it). I've yet to figure out how to do that.

Here's a question for you web-design savy guys/gals:

Is there a thumbnail program out there that automatically makes your thumb image for you. I think I have been doing it the old fashion way. I have been making the thumb image and then using a hyperlink code and inserting the thumb image in where the text would normally go to make the thumb link work.

Seems to me there has got to be a better way or a program that will take your larger image and create the thumb image/link for you.

Anyhoo, Thanks for sharing your new site here Brian!! I think it looks very professional and polished. I have added it to favorites and look forword to watching it evolve. :-)

Dave(Outrage)

PS - I learned everything I know from viewing "source" at other sites. That can be an incredible learning tool.

That's Pete's black seabass. 55#, caught off Goleta Beach on plastic. There's a story in the saltwater reports. Check the archives.

Outrage- I used Dreamweaver for the site. Those types of programs are referred to as WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). I wish I could write all from html... Sometimes the WYSIWYG programs write sloppy code and you really should go in and clean it up. I'm sure mine is a mess, I didn't have time to go through and check it before I FTP'd it this afternoon. There is a feature in illustrator, I believe, that does a whole thumbnail thing for you. I'm pretty sure it's illustrator, might be a different program. Anybody? Anybody?

Great job grasshopper :-)

I give it an A for the first effort.

Dreamweaver 4 is the only way in my book. html code, what's that? I'm only half kidding though. Jamon and I did the original Jamon and Rob's Fishing Page in pico on Jamon's USC server. But it's all forgotten now!

You need a cooler URL though Brian, maybe calfishing.com/grasshopper?

Just kidding ya

Code... what's that??? Isn't that what it's called?? I wish I could sit down with one of you guys and have you explain a few things that I'm sure are basic common sense facts. Like I said earlier... I'm self taught and have never had a computer class in my life. I have had my computer for a little less than 2 years but I've spent a lot of time trying to learn how to use it as well as how to best use the net. It's been a real challenge but a lot of fun just figuring things out.

Here is the code from my front page. It is all from scratch. I need a web mentor I guess because this stuff is sooooo confusing. At the time that I began experimented with designing a website I didn't know there was any other way to do things. I thought that was why these web design guys got paid the big bucks? Guess I've still got a lot to learn!!

Well, it's been fun and an education to say the least. I'm still learn'in and will continue to do so.

So there it is. That's the best I can do given what I have learned to date. It started as an experiment and continues to be an experiment but it's pretty cool for a first attempt.

If any of you guys want to help a brother out I'm all ears.

Dave,
I'd say you're doing great for coding it by hand. Coding by hand really is an art that is difficult to get good at. I wish I could help you out with it more, but unfortunately I really have forgetten most of what little html coding I used to know.

As far as the thumbnail thing, I think that Macromedia Fireworks 4 has a feature that allows batch processing to create thumbnails, but I didn't install it on my new computer so I don't know for sure. I still do it the manual way using paint shop pro 6.02. I have a hard time with the vector based image editing programs. It has taken me a lot of years to get decent at making sites and like you, I'm entirely self taught. The best thing I ever did was givinig up on Netscape Composer and taking the time to learn Dreamweaver 2. The Template and Library Item capabilities in Dreamweaver allow you to build large sites without using frames and easily update them later. When I do the annual update on wonbass.com, these features save me literally hundreds of hours. Front Page has similar features but all of the Microsoft html generating programs are total garbage in my opinion. They design the pages only for the IE browser and they add so much additional html that you don't need, it makes the pages slow to load.

So I mentioned my new computer and I think I need to brag }> I built myself an AMD Athalon 1600+ XP box with 512 megs of PC2100 ram and a 32meg Radeon VE video card. I'm running Windows XP with Office XP and this thing smokes! Just had to share ... sorry !

I'm no html expert either, but from what I can see it looks clean. Knowing as much html as you do will really help you out if you decide to use those editors like Dreamweaver. Sometimes you just have to open up the hood and fix the html to get what you want. Especially if there's a problem with the site that you can't figure out.
