#88, "Rockets & Surf"

Hi Guys,
I'm a new transplant to the central coast, fresh from the desert of New Mexico. Yesterday I got to see a spectacular launch of a Titan IV, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Now after spending several years in the high desert, I was drawn to the beaches here at Vandenberg AFB. All I saw were miles of empty beaches and not one wet line in it. Now it seems to me that this is just wrong! So I want to "wet" a line in it but being a "new" guy to all of this I'm not sure where to start....
Fishing is allowed here but I have yet to see anybody doing it, so I have Surf to cast into as well as a pier to fish off of. I was thinking that maybe nothing "good" is running this time of the year but after scanning the board it seems that I am wrong. I have some gear, but as for setup of rigs and bait and such I am at a loss. So if you guys could point me in the right direction I will do my best to turn this trend around... (when the rockets aren't scaring the fish that is)
Thanks,
J....

Thanks, being on the Titan Launch Team I take great pride in that launch! Now for fishing. The public beach between North and South VAFB is currently off limits except for a designated 1/4 mile stretch to protect the Snowy Plover that lays its eggs in the sand. If you are military(I'm not) you have more beach available to you on the base. The popular fish is the Barred Surf Perch that love sand crabs. Use a hi/low leader configuration. Pismo Pier is a good spot at night for Thresher shark and rays. I haven't fished down south at Goleta but I know some of the guys here do and can fill you in. Jalama beach is another spot for surf fishing. Also check out www.pierfishing.com for the Californis pier and surf fishing info.
