Hey, did anyone else get a weird message in their inbox from our newest member "jessx"? Anyone know what the deal is?

Yeah...I got one too. Someone must have infiltrated the calfishing.com profiles and is sending out a scam to everyones email that's listed. I just deleted mine and hope that will be the end of it and we didn't get added to someones "list"
Ken

Just saw the post that Rob put out...looks like he's taken care of it!
Thanks, Rob

It's spam. An off-shore banking scam. (Hey, that kinda rhymes)
I've seen it before in both e-mail & snail mail.

I'm sure Rob will ban the user profile. Unfortunately the spammers probably got all our e-mail addys too, if it's in your profile. An old spammer trick.

I heard a good tip the other day. Not sure how well it works.
Write your e-mail as; joeuser_AT_myemail_DOTCOM and spell out your phone number, if you post it. Five Seven Six Seven Seven One Six (576-SPAM) :+

Unfortunately,
I got some SPAM email from an extremely similar email account last night. :( The email account was: jessyc2ygmail.com
That's a bummer, I hate spammers.

So long as you didn't reply to the email - which I am guessing no one in their right mind would, they do not have your email address.

You receieve an email from the forum software when you get a private message. The sender of the private message is not able to see your email however.

I apologize for the messages, its unfortunately unavoidable. If I see any more suspect user accounts created, they'll be deteled immediately.

The email didn't come through like an alert to a private message, it was a normal email... but either way I didn't answer it. It happens, don't worry about it Rob. Thanks for working hard to keep on top of stuff like that.

Matt

I understand that you received an actual email. I got one also.

But let me try to explain in more detail how this works because I want to make it clear that your email address IS private and confidential when you register an account on calfishing.com

Overview: The dcforum software that calfishing.com uses for the message boards has a private message feature. You may enable or disable this functionality in the user menu under 'edit your preference'. Here is the specific option:

http://www.calfishing.com/dc/user_files/3968-pm_system.jpg

When someone sends you a private message using this system, you'll get a little notification at the top of the forum telling you that you have a new message in your inbox. You may also get an email notification that you have a message. Whether you get an email or not is determined by this setting which is also in the user menu under 'edit your preference'

http://www.calfishing.com/dc/user_files/3967-notify.jpg

When you get this notification that you have a private message, it is sent by the server usining sendmail. The person who sends you the private message DOES NOT have the ability to view your email address. This system is in place to prevent spammers from using spider software to harvest email addresses from the forum. I would never run forum software where your email address is displayed because I hate spam and the people who send it.

I am going to file a request with the software developer to limit the number of private messages that a single user can send in a given time period so try to reduce this problem in the future. As time consuming as it is to register an account with a real email address, get the confirmation email, log in, and then manually go through and spam people using the private message system, someone obviously has the spare time to do it. So again, I apologize for the inconvenience and you have my assurance that I will do whatever I can to eliminate problems like this in the future.

I thought it was spam, just wondering if anyone else got it.

Rob, thanks for taking care of the problem so quickly! :7

On my hotmail I get them all the time. And the best part of all is when you reply to them with bogus information and keep them going. I usually reply back in the same broken up english that they type the original e-mail in. I give them a name, like Seymour Butts, and I will give them an address like, 6969 falatio dr, and I always use West Hollywood as the city, and kalifornia cause you know we have more freaks and panzies than anywhere else. Then I give the rejection hotline phone number as a contact number to call me at. Total comedy as they will reply back and I will send them more crap !!!!! I turn my junkmail box up to 100 % to weed out any additional and play the game with them !!!! gotta love it !!!
