#2550, "Night Lites"

I fish the duct out here mainly at night in the summer and have always used the regular old forehead mounted miners style light. I heard from a friend of mine about the newer LED style lights available. I understand they last much longer, are lighter, and provide much more light. Has anyone had any experience with these. They cost about 4 times as much and was wondering if they are worth the extra money. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have two different styles of Black Diamond (Tm) LED lights that work great. One uses AAA and the other used AA batteries. I highly recommend them. Each was around $25. Each has 4 LED bulbs. The AAA is lighter and has 3-level + strobe lighting. The AA is on/off but with the bigger batteries the effective lighting (can see in the bottom of backpack) is longer. As the batteries wear down the light is dimmer but doesn't just cut out on you. Makes night jetty fishing do-able when you can see for rock-hopping. The LEDs don't take away night vision as bad as some other kinds. I fish sand bass at night too and the extra lighting is great. I plan to do some lobster hooping from a kayak and the headlight should really help with that.

Thanks for the input. I fish mainly at night here during the summer at the duct and my old style light just won't make it for an all night trip. The prices sound much better than what I was looking at. Thanks for the link.

I'll never buy another non-LED light again. Way better battery life, brighter, and now days easy to find and cheap.

As far as night vision goes, get red filters for your lamps. Red won't kill your night vision. You can go to a camera shop that sells filters for lighting gear. Get a gel in red (#83 I think). I think a 20 x 24" gel costs about $6. Then just cut out hunks and tape it over your lights.

LED's are great! The batteries last from 50 to 70 hours. The best deal going on an LED light is the Energizer brand available at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods section. They sell them for $12.99 and they come with 2 AAA batteries. The nice thing about them is they have 2 bright white LED's and one red LED that works great once your night vision is working. Go check them out.
