Does anyone have reliable information on how not to get took in CSL?

I will be taking a trip down first week of July. Have read quite a bit, but want first-hand intel.

Will try to charter ~23-26 ft craft for a day of billfish or just go panga fishing for nearshore stuff.

Specifically:

1) what scams to avoid
2) should I bring my own gear?
3) name a reputable charter service

Thnx,

Marty

Solmar Fleet is excellent. I have heard that Pices is good. Solmar Fleet reservations from USA is at (800) 344-3349; from Mexico, (624) 143-0646. Solmar cruisers 23' to 42', plus pangas, and superpangas. Tackle is provided. I have heard that Sushi Time superpangas is good also. They too provide tackle. Good luck and give report.

I went down a month ago.
Unfortunately, there was a very strong wind when we were there.
We went out with the Solmar Fleet for 8 hours, it was 75$ per person+ mexican sportfishing license and bait.
They had equipment on the boat, maybe not top-of-the-line, but we had Tuna Sticks with Senator reels.
If you want to bring your own stuff, don't forget to put your reels in your luggage, and not in the cabinluggage. I think the limit for reels is 10 per man, if you bring more they consider it that it is for sale purpose.
If you want to try surfcasting for Roosterfish etc. a 8 foot rod with a Calcutta 400 loaded with 20-25 lbs monofilament is a good combination.

Bring plenty of 1's and 5's for tips and misc. When on a boat be firm on what you want to do. Alot of times they like to take newbies on boat rides trolling for marlin. If they get one great--but sometimes the tuna can hitting like mad and you would not know. Find out in town what is biting and where and tell the captain. Act like you have been there before and there is less chance of them messing with you. There are numerous reputable fleets and boats. Stick with them. Don't go for the guy who is hawking it down by the docks. They usually have inferior equipment--fishing and/or boat. If a deal sounds too good to be true-------it probably is.
Stay away from the Giggling Marlin or Squid Roe the night before you fish and you will be ok.
have fun.
