#1924, "I need new waders! Ideas?"

Any recs? I know some brands and styles have been mentioned by QM and others but I can't remember the details.

Here's how I found out: I was tubing perris and when I got out, my sweat pants were soaked. I guess the leak was slow enough I didn't feel anything coming in over the 3 hours I was out there. They were Bass Pro "Bone Dry" neoprenes which I had hardly used. More like "Mop Wet" brand. Oh, always carry an extra pair of pants in the car, lol.

I've noticed that when the water is cold - my sweats that I wear beneath breathable waders get soaked... but only when the water is cold. I think that your body heat makes you sweat and that explains how you get soaked. I think this because I can wear the same stuff the next time out when the water is not so cold and not get soaked. Make sense?

Yeah but this was only down one leg from the crotch (I know, sounds funny). The wetness was way more than sweat. Ok, I said no jokes! LOL.

What a way to find out they were leaking..
My cheap waders started to leak from the ankle. I used a repair kit from sportmart to patch them up and they have held up pretty good. Not sure If you want to go that route. I've heard good stuff about cabelas.

I've been told by the guys over at Bob Marriot's not to wear anything made of cotton as this is a material that does not wick away sweat or breath well when wet.. Wear fleece, polypro, polyester, or something synthetic that will wick away sweat. I bought a pair of fleece lined spandex underpants on sale at sports chalet.. These were made to wear under snow pants / windbreaker shell so you can sweat and still stay dry in them..

I wear them under my waders and it works out really well. Keeps me dry and warm. There are currently lots of good deals on this stuff because everyone's trying to dump all there snow gear. I got a 60% discount and payed a little over $20.00.

As for Waders.. I just got a pair of Simms breathables and they are awesome. Very comfortable (w/ the underpants) and keeps me very dry. I payed about $150.00 for them. I got my pair from Bob Marriots in Anaheim (Orangthorpe) but you might be able to find a better deal in eBay.. Good luck!

You may want to check out those Cabela's models. They are all great waders. Another great brand is Redington. I know a lot of fly fishing guys who use nothing but Redington's.

I have the Cabela's Premium Dry-Plus wader's and I'm EXTREMELY happy with them.

They are very easy to get in and out of, super comfortable, and extrmely durable with re-enforced EVERYTHING.

They are not cheap ($170.00) but if you do decide to spend the dough, you won't be disappointed.

I hate Neoprene (No offense to those who like em'!) You feel like your in a sauna after the air temp goes above 70.

For Winter Tubing, I layer my lower half with Thermals and nylon sweat pants Basketball Warm-ups) and the Waders.

Above the waist; Thermals, a T-shirt, a Sweat Shirt or Pullover (If the air is not going above 55 that day) Rain Jacket and of course, My Boo-Ya Beanie! I can then pull off layers accordingly.

If it is going to be super cold....I usually sleep in! Ha Ha!

Just my 2-cents.

Hope you find what you are looking for!

Peace!

"Rodsnapper"

Hey Fongster,

I fish a lot of water here in So Cal. and the mid west. I went thru a lot of different waders without spending the money on breathables. There is by far no comparison to these types of waders.
I bought a pair of simms guide model hip waders about 4 yrs. ago. They are Goretex and come with articulated extra reinforced knees. This allows you to bend easily at the knees. Very comfortable. And because they breathe you don't get any moisture inside thus keeping you dry and warm. I send them back to Simms in Boseman MOntana once a year and get them ckecked. They will do a pressure check and fix any pin holes for about 20 bucks. I have abused my waders and they still work great.
They are so thin, there is no drag when tubing or wading. You can really tell the difference when you wade a big river like the Henry's Fork or the Big Hole. If you tube at night you can't beat them.

Hey there fongster

Nice finally meeting you at the Big Hammer booth! I ended up getting 90+ baits at that booth! ha ha

Hodgeman waders have been around longer than both our ages together! You can usually get a good deal at Sportsmart. Did you know they can knock down the price at..... whoops ...... better not say that. I assume you're going to use them with a float tube.

Anywho, I also have body glove waders but they don't compare. After making sure they are the chest high type, your next biggest decision will be whether you get the ones that have the booties attached or a one-piece w/bootie model. This decision might be influenced by what type of fins you're going to use though. Good hunting!
