Nico figured it out. It basically had to do with the watermarking feature. Internet explorer wasn't happy that the gallery wanted to check the referring link when an image is displayed. I don't really understand it in great detail but this issue basically allowed you to see the image only if you referenced it certain ways in IE. Like that's why you could click an image in one place and see it but not in another place. I disabled the watermarking feature and it seems to be happier now.
