#2233, "Poll question: How do you handle violators/poachers?"

So what action do you take? How well has it worked? I have found DFG a tad slow to respond to my calls, if at all. Probably a man-power or communications issue. It was the latter today. I did call in on a guy fishing 3 rods today and the DFG warden called me back. He got the info from Sacramento too late--1 1/2 hour later. The guy was long gone. He gave me his cell # to call him directly next time.

Poll result (15 votes)
I call DFG/CalTip immediately (4 votes)Vote
I confront the person(s) in some manner (10 votes)Vote
It's none of my business--I ignore what's happening (1 votes)Vote

Depending on the situation I'll normally approach the guy and inform him that he's breaking the law. If he continues to do what he's doing, I've got cal tip in my cell phone. If it's something I'd like to see him get busted for I'll call straight to cal tip.

Yeah Brian, it depends on a few things. What he/they are doing and if there's danger in it for me approaching them, i.e. physical harm, lol. Lately, I have run into folks who reply in a sarcastic voice, "oh, well then we'd better stop doing that..." That hacks me off and I will switch from being cordial to in-their-face. That is probably not the right approach but they sure back off, especially when my cell phone comes out. The trouble is, so many people today feel that if they believe it enough or want it enough, then they have the right to do whatever they want. It's a very selfish "It's all about me" attitude.

I agree. Poachers suck. I show very little remorse for people keeping over limits, or short fish, and that kind of thing. If it's something that I can see directly hurting the fishery, it's gonna stop... Whether that means calling cal tip, informing the dude, or whatever. It would take a lot for me to ignore the problem.

If I feel it is safe I usually try to say something...I guess it all depends on the situation.

Poachers make all of us look bad, especially to the enviros.

Earlier this year, during the first major WSB flurry over at Anacapa, my fellow chartermembers and I witnessed a guy catch his limit (1 WSB), then keep fishing. We all told him that the limit was one, and he gave us "the bird"....Yes, we called the DFG, and no, nothing happened.

Then another time over at Catalina...my buddy and I were telling the above story to a few anglers the night before, THEN this older, salty guy (I think he was a deadhead) walked over and anounced to us all that he was planning on keeping as many WSB as he could physically catch, and that NOBODY better get in his way---and he looked DIRECTLY at my buddy and me. What a piece of work. I think the skippper heard our "conversation" because I didn't have to say anything; the next day he consistently checked everyone's sacks and was counting fish all throughout the day. The skipper made it clear to the entire boat that he was very aware of what the limit was, and that his boat was not going to violate it.

I've told people what the rules are in the past. What they do with it after that is up to themselves.

Dead fish aint worth a dead wils as far as i'm concerned.
