#1784, "Minn Kota Power Drive 765MX question"

I was given a Minn Kota Power Drive 765MX (36 pounds thrust) front mount motor by a friend who was having trouble with it and had just purchased a new motor. I assume that this model motor is not currently made by Minn Kota. The propeller drive works fine. However, the motor will not steer in either direction. I took the power unit apart and checked the steering motor and the various gears inside. They all appear to be working OK and are in good alignmnet. The little steering motor itself works fine when hooked directly to a 12 volt battery. It reverses direction by simply changing the polarity.

I am suspecting that the problem is with the micro-touch foot pedal. My question is whether anyone knows if this is a likely problem with these motors. I noted that in a recent post someone else was having similar trouble with a PD40 motor.

I found a replacement foot pedal at Cabelas for $69.95. After looking around in the web, that appears to be a good price. Can anyone enlighten me further? Is there a way to check the functionality of the foot pedal to verify that it is the problem without replacing it first? Do the newer models use the same foot pedal as the older ones?

Thanks for any help.

First I would check out the wires that what was wrong w/ one of my older motors some may have pulled out be loose or something else. Other than this I dont know what to suggest other than buying a used one from someone you could probably get one for 75 bucks or so.

Good Luck

See if you can find a manual for any minn kota they have a trouble shooting section in there.

I had the 765MX before I got the PD40

The foot pedals appear identical, however I can't say for sure the one on cabelas is the right one for the 765MX. I would call Minn Kota and ask. Their # is 800-227-6433. Post here when you get the answer, it might save someone some headache down the road.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to borrow a foot pedal from someone who had a working motor of the same kind. I tried it but it didn't solve the problem. I'll probably take it in to the authorized repair shop and have them take a look at it.

I'll post here with what I find for the benefit of others.
