#14255, "Bay story - Feb 4"

Come, gather around children, let me tell you a tale of a day on the bay down San Diego way. The story starts at 5:30am at the Shelter Island launch ramp where we find a handsome fellow named Fishtricks cussing up a storm and pulling with all his might, trying to start an outboard with a dead battery…..

After what felt like 30 minutes I was exhausted and couldn’t do it anymore. It didn’t help that the little rope was covered in 2stroke oil. I had to decide use the trolling motor all day or use the gas motor all day. I only had 1 good battery and my boat needs 2 to be complete. Since we were on the big bay, I opted for the outboard. This was rather discouraging because the plan was to hammer structure all day looking for big calicos, but I need a TM to do that properly. Well, the tide was pretty good for shuffling up sandies so that’s what we did.

More fun than a glow in the dark Spicegirls poster.

I’ll post the pictures in order, so it’s kinda like watching a little movie.

Long lined the incoming tide. Caught a bunch of sandbass nothing too big. Then the tide went dead slack and the wind was still sleeping, so we went to see if we could fish the jetty without a trolling motor. I tell you what…

You know where you are? You’re at the jetty Baby, and you’re gonna DIE! Huuh!! So here we are with a dead slack tide. Shishkabab put’s on a swimbait and starts vertical jiggin’ it next to the jetty(Paul) and he get’s nailed (atpjunkie) and it’s something big(Paul). I grab the net and scoop up the biggest sculpin I’ve ever seen(atpjunkie).

This fish weighed nearly 3lbs. Beautiful!! Then 5 minutes later he does it again!

And if you go carrying picture of Chairman Mao, you ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow…. Before we leave the jetty Shish blast a bass on the swimbait too.

It was at this point that I cut off his swimbait and made him tie one of my products on. J/k. Speaking of that(segue into blatant product placement), check out the new Spinbomb head design. I likey!!!

Well the water started moving and slack tide was over. Did you catch the part about the slack tide Paul? And the big fish atpjunie? OK, good. As I recall it ended much too soon. Back in the bay to shuffle the outgoing tide this time. The bassin was good we caught lots, but the fish were rather smallish for the most part.

Unbeatable weather and Superbowl induced lack of crowds made for a great day afterall.
