After hearing about Bryan's success yesterday and the nice conditions Brian and I decided to float tube Haskell's this morning for a couple hours during the rising tide. The bite was on from the moment we got there but tapered off pretty quick. Right away Brian got two short halibut on the crankbait and I got a legal (23 or 24 inches) on the 5 inch Silverside colored Big Hammer. Instead of bottom bouncing I had the 5 inch bait rigged on a 1/2 oz. jig head and I was just casting into the surf and using a straight grind with short pauses every 6-8 turns of the handle. I have found this technique to be pretty productive - especially when the fish seem to be on a crankbait bite or when the water is clear. After I got the legal I started experimenting. I switched to the 6 inch version of the Silverside colored Hammer and missed what felt like a nice fish that left some cool teeth marks in my brand new bait. After that I played around with the crankbaits for a while but they didn't do much for me. Brian ended up with 6 short halibut and a surfperch. The legal was the only fish I was able to get to the tube.
