#10634, "Red Drum & Team Striper-S.D. Tuna 8-21" Fri Aug-22-03 10:36 AM by Team Striper
Another "should have been there yesterday" story. My father Steve his business partner Ken & I were invited to join Vince aboard the "Big Drum". We launced out of Shelter Island around 3:AM headed for the 213 with the fresh dope from Mitch (FISHRDI), Thanks! Our first two stops were skippies, 4 of them I think? The next couple stops were ones & two’s but no baitfish. On 2 of the stops I hooked up on the slide using 5" Big Hammer’s in the Tuna ‘Chovy pattern on a 1.5 oz. Hammer Head. BUT I broke one of these brutes off fishing 20 lb. Our last stop of the day was 2 penut albie’s, one troll/one on the slide with a Hammer. While soaking bait on that stop my Dad’s rod went off but he missed it. Seconds later Vince’s bait got blindsided & it was on. After a very respectable battle a beautiful 30+ lb. Bluefin hit the deck, then the ice! I think this was our only fish that ate a sardine:
Our final total was: 5 25-30lb. class albacore 2 10 lb. class albies 1 30+ lb. bluefin 4 little purple skippies
Not a banner day but from what we heard/saw I think we did pretty good & I KNOW we all had a great time + great weather! Vince, thanks again for the invite! It’s always a pleasure fishing with with you.
