#83, "September 26, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

The weather today was hot and calm up at the lake. Probably 85 degrees and the lack of wind made it even hotter. I headed over to the coves across from the White Oak ramp to start the day. First point I come to I had a tap tap on a 5" big hammer swimbait. I figured there were more fish on the point so I grabbed my spinning rod still rigged with a 4" power worm from yesterday at Cachuma. Second cast it goes thunk, I reeled down and set the hook in to a nice 2lb 8oz'er. The fish came off the outer weed line in about 15 feet of water. I switched back and forth between the worm and the swimbait for the next couple 2 hours farming one on the swimbait but with no further bites on the worm. Down at jackass canyon I had another tap tap on the swimbait but again the fish didn't eat it. <BR>By now it was getting dark so I went to some of the water where I have done well in the late evening on hot days in the last couple months. First point another tap tapper and again no fish. Next point I hooked one, a small fish and it jumped and spit it. At least they were starting to bite. I come around into this cove and stick a two and half pounder on the swimbait. I about tore it's head off with the hookset because it did the hit it and swim at you thing. I was feeling fired up now and I knew right where some more fish would be so I cut across the cove I was fishing on to some subtle points. Bang hooked up another one and bounced it in the boat a 2 pounder. Very next cast a litte further down the bank and I whacked another one but it jumped and came off. This was the end of the good water so I headed for the marina cove for the last few casts. Stuck another one right where it should have been but it jumped off too. So I wound up with 3 fish but should have had 6 or 8. When it's hot the only thing you can do is stick it out and be at the right place when the sun goes down. If the weather gets windy or cool they seem to want to bite all day but on days like today it's purely and evening affair.
