#78, "September 16, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today was a mid-day run to the lake. Fished from 1 to 7pm. I feel like I could write pages about the fishing today but I'll try to keep it reasonable. Things started out good. I fished the marina cove with the swimbait first off. 5 minutes in to it I was slowly swimming it over deep water and the line jumped to the side. I hooked the fish and brought it to the boat, easily a 4 pounder. Should have lipped it but went for the bounce job and the fish fell off as soon as it's head came out of the water. Ugghhh. Then I farmed a nice bite again over deep water. Working the east bank I saw a small strand of grass growing out about 10 feet from the main weedline. I cast the swimbait quietly up in the aisle and got freight trained!!! The fish hit so hard it slammed the rod into my side and I got sort of an awkward hookset and farmed it. Unbelievable! This was a *big* fish no doubt about it. I've had some savage bites on the ac minnow and the swimbait but this thing was really really movin. So that was frustrating to lose 2 nice fish. Next I fished vaca flats across from Jackass canyon. No bites in the first small coves but coming to flats area I landed a nice one and weighed it at 3lb 5oz. I kept working down the bank and saw a similar area to where I had just caught that fish. Sure enough bang, another nice bite and I farmed it again! So I'm like 1 for 4 now and I worked all the way back into Salsipuedes where I landed a 2 pounder on the sink. Salsipuedes was pretty dead other than that so as I got to the east point I looked at my other rods and decided to pick up the spinning rod on which I had a 3" pro-comp flutter slug that I picked up at Wilderness Outfitters this week. This bait just looked good, the sun was hot and the water was clear so I figured what he heck? The rest of the rig consisted of a 1/8oz darthead and 6lb test, not your traditional Margarita setup. Well two casts later I had a scrappy 2 pounder on. Ok I thought time to go to jackass canyon and see if they'll eat this over there. First cast in Jackass I hooked another 2 or so pound fish which jumped and spit it. I only fished the points and caught a fish of each of the three main points there but they were all about 12". I continued back towards the marina until I came up on a sheer wall dropping in to 20 feet of water. First cast on the edge produced a 1.5 pounder. Next cast was another fish a little bigger. Thinking I might have a steep rock pattern I hit two other spots I knew but didn't find them. By then it's about 6pm so I went back to the marina cove intending to fish the steep stuff on the outside of it. First cast a dink and then another fish about 14". You could sure tell where they were going to be! Then I see Dean over on his point in front of the marina and he sticks a nice fish on a worm so I go over to check it out and get another one about 15". Not too much size on the darthead fish but you could definitely pick up a limit doing this. The bites came almost entirely on the fall. Luckily they seem to hold on to it pretty good and I only missed 2 bites which were probably smaller fish anway. Sometimes you just have to do something different <img src="http://www.calfishing.com/dcforum/Images/happy.gif">
