#76, "September 12, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today the weather was a little warmer than it had been. I fished from 5pm to 7:45pm tonight at the lake. The evening started out quickly with a 14"er on my second cast using the calico bass colored 5" fish trap. Catching one right away usually jinxes you pretty good and this was the case as I fished from the outside of the marina cove back in to the swimming pool cove and then towards the dam and had no bites to speak of. I tried a buzzbait and a spinnerbait but no luck. At 7 I went to the area where I did well last night but all I could find was two short bites both on main lake points. I didn't even set on either bite, just the tap tap and they were gone. It was getting dark so I headed in to the marina cove and finally connected with a nice fish right in front of Angler's Outpost. The fish felt heavy and didn't jump much. When I bounced it in the boat it was covered in moss. I cleaned off the fish and put it on the scale, a nice 3-7. With that I called it a night, but while I was taking my stuff from the boat to the car I watched Austin, who parks his boat next to mine, stick three fish on the spinnerbait. Definitely an evening thing, he said he got 5 in the last 1/2 hour or so. I think the overall picture is that on cool days when the wind blows the mid day bite is going to be decent, but when it's hotter and calmer as it was today it's going to be strictly a late evening bite. Sure is nice not having to put the boat on the trailer at the end of the day sometimes, it gives you that extra 20 minutes to get on the good bite!
