#7413, "Laguna Niguel 12-20-02"

I went down to Laguna Niguel lake the night before, hoping to beat the rain, and I did. I didn't want to drive on the 91 freeway during the rain in the morning, it can be horrendous. John also met me the night before. We were the first two in line, with the next person coming around 2. The rain came right around midnight, and throughout the night it really came down hard.

When the lake opened up, they made us turn right when we went in, as the lake was over flowing and the creek was running very high. As we pulled in and got our permits, the rain was coming down in bucketful's. We got out on the water and started tubing right away. For some the bite was hot right off the bat, and for others slow. John got the first hit out of us, and I missed a few as well.

My first fish came on a drift in front of the boat docks on an orange power worm. John's first fish also came in front of the docks on one of his hand poured worms.

We caught a few more and then went down the to the flats. As we went down, John had a leak in his waders, so we went back the other way, so he could get out and dry.

We both went back around noon again, and went to the far side from the boat docks. As we got to that side, we drifted along and got a few more fish. All in all the fishing wasn't really great, but it wasn't poor either. I released 4 fish, and kept 5 for a total of 9 fish. My total weight of the fish was nine and a half pounds with two, two and a half pounders. John I believe caught 5 fish, and two on his little 2 foot rod.

On a side note the staff at Laguna Niguel is a very friendly staff, and works hard to make sure everyone is having a good day. Just be careful of the shoreline guys, right now after the storms, it is very slippery and muddy. I, and a few others slipped today out there.

Tight Lines,
Jason Huckeba
